In the book The Fault In Our Stars by John Green, the main character, Hazel Grace, is introduced as a teen. However, she’s not your average teen, she is suffering from thyroid (lung) cancer. She’s described as a sixteen-year-old girl with short hair that’s dark brown, green eyes, and has ‘chipmunk cheeks.’ She's described as a girl who carries an oxygen tank around that had a tube to her nose.
Her mother thinks she’s depressed and has anxiety because of her cancer, but Hazel says it’s because she’s dying and it’s a sign of waning. Since her mother believed she struggled from anxiety and depression, she sent her to a support group for teens that were suffering from cancer just like her. While at her support group she fell in love with a boy named Augustus Waters. They would spend all of their time together until one day Augustus got very ill and passed away.
In this book, there were multiple quotes that I surprisingly liked. For example, one that really stood out to me was, “You don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world… but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices”. This was one of my favorite quotes because it was honestly beautiful and eye-opening. It showed me how you get to choose who is in your life and who you can let hurt you, however, you can select what obstacles you’ll face in this world. Another quote I really liked was, “As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once”. I also surprisingly liked this quote because it’s about love and how your emotions can be so strong for an individual. It’s also the way she felt about Augustus Waters in the book.
After reading The Fault In Our Stars. I’ve learned multiple things about life. The theme of the book is love and is also life and death. What I learned was that even though you are sick and have a possibility of dying, you can still find joy in life. You should always make the best of life and be grateful for what you have because you may be much more fortunate than others are. Another thing I learned in this story was that love is such a beautiful thing to have in life, it may take a while to find the right person, but when you do you’ll be happy.
After reading this story about Hazel Grace, I’d definitely recommend this book to a girlfriend. If you like romantic novels, it would be a perfect book for you. There is also a movie based on the book. The author, John Green, has a series with many books like this one. Overall, I’d rate this book 3.5 stars out of 5 stars because I don’t really like romance, but it was a good story.
