The article New Science of Happiness extensively highlights a number of ways of making life more satisfying. It provides suggestions of what makes people happier and recommends various steps towards achieving a more satisfactory life. Most people find happiness in family connections and friendship. A good relationship with the children and friends contributes towards the lives of others (Wallis, 2005). Also, life is made more satisfactory through a healthy relationship with the parents and the degree of control over individuals’ lives and destiny.

Ultimately, spiritual life and worship, what an individual does during their leisure times and the holiday periods such as Christmas and the New year also contribute towards a happier life. A more satisfying life can be achieved through taking good care of our bodies, investing quality time and energy in friends and family and developing strategies for coping with stress and hardships (Wallis, 2005).

In terms of my reaction to the article, I like this work and find it educative. The article mentions practices of achieving a satisfactory life which is precise, appropriate and doable by any individual. The aspects that stuck out in this article are steps of taking good care of our bodies which are easier and straightforward in regards to making life more satisfactory. For instance, satisfactory life can be achieved by having plenty of sleep, working out and performing exercises and laughing more often. Additionally, these steps resonate very well with an individual. For instance, developing strategies for coping with stress and hardships has a lot of significance in our modern societies. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” thus there is need to cope with various hardships (Wallis, 2005).

Owing that psychology is a science, this article conducted a research study whose aim was to find out whether people woke up generally happy. The study formulated a question Do you generally wake up happy? and represented the findings on a Pie chart. Out of 1009 adult Americans who participated in this research, 80% of them indicated to be happy while 14% indicated not to be happy when they woke up. 6% of the participants reported not be sure if they were happy when they woke up (Wallis, 2005, p. 2).

Among the eight ways of making life “happier” as explained by this article, I consider taking good care of oneself and developing strategies for coping with stress and hardships essential and could implement them in my life in various ways. Taking good care of the body facilitates in making life more satisfying. This is made possible by doing a lot of exercises, getting enough sleep, smiling and laughing a lot (Wallis, 2005).

In addition, establishing strategies for coping with stress and hardships helps in making life more satisfying. This can be facilitated by religious and secular beliefs to help people cope with the hardships since hard times cannot be avoided. If this is done regularly, it will contribute to making life happier. Good body caring and strategies of coping with stress have been selected because they involve activities that are simple to do thus can be easily implemented by an individual (Wallis, 2005).

In conclusion, it is evident that a satisfactory life can be achieved by performing simple practices such as observing good body care and maintaining a healthy relationship among families and friends. Life is full of stressors of which coping with them contributes to making life happier. Therefore, by performing these practices, we are likely to lead happy lives.
