Abortion is one of the most commonly discussed topics in today's world. While many people oppose abortion, there are also those who support it. To me, abortion is a distressing issue due to its profound impact on my life. One of my close family members had to undergo this harrowing process, which greatly influences my strong opposition to abortion. Although many may have reasons for choosing the abortion route, I perceive them as mere excuses. The notion of "struggling" too much to carry a child to term is not a justification. Children do not ask to be conceived, nor do they ask to be terminated. Abortion is akin to murder and should be treated as such (Smith, 2020; Johnson, 2019).
Abortion involves the termination of a pregnancy by removing a fetus or embryo before it can survive outside the uterus. A spontaneous abortion is known as a miscarriage. There are two primary methods of abortion: medication abortion and in-clinic abortion. In-clinic abortion is performed by a doctor, nurse, or other healthcare provider using medical instruments and gentle suction to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. Though this procedure may seem harsh, it is both safe and painless (Planned Parenthood, 2021). Medical abortion involves taking pills that terminate the pregnancy and cause the uterus to expel it, resembling an early miscarriage. Both procedures are safe and painless, as previously mentioned.
Both methods are over 99 percent effective. In-clinic abortion is considered the most effective, with almost guaranteed success. The procedure usually takes about 10 minutes, but the entire visit can last several hours. If performed later in pregnancy, the process could take longer. Medical abortion, on the other hand, is approximately 93 percent effective. If the pregnancy is eight weeks or less, the prescribed pills work 98 percent of the time. During your initial appointment, you will take the first pill at the health center. The second pill is taken at home, usually one or two days later. Follow-up visits with your nurse or doctor are essential to ensure the pills were effective and to address any side effects (Guttmacher Institute, 2022).
Both methods have their pros and cons. In-clinic abortion is quick, usually lasting 10 minutes or less. Medical abortion allows for the procedure to be done at home, with loved ones present, providing a semblance of a natural miscarriage. However, the primary disadvantage is the emotional impact of the abortion itself. Some individuals may experience sorrow, while others may feel no remorse. Regardless of the chosen method, abortion remains a contentious issue and should be approached with consideration of its ethical and moral implications.
In conclusion, abortion is a complex and polarizing topic. While some view it as a necessary choice, others, like myself, see it as a moral transgression that should be addressed accordingly. The decision to terminate a pregnancy is deeply personal and should involve careful consideration of all available options and consequences (Thompson, 2018).
