Introduction: A Leader is a person who has the command to direct and leads in a certain field. As stated by Professor Warren G. Bennis, “Leaders are people who do the right thing; managers are people who do things right”. Leaders are the ones who do not order their sub-coordinates but work with them together to achieve a set of goals of an organization. They work together to bring out the best in the deputy and motive them to bring the best result in the organization. Background: Abraham Lincoln is one of the greatest leaders and he was born on twelfth (12th) February, 1809 in Hodgenville, Kentucky. He is a self-educated lawyer Illinois. Abraham Lincoln falls under trait leadership theory since he has the traits of intellective traits like being self-educated (intelligence) and was very knowledgeable. He also has social characteristics he was very friendly with everyone and very social. Thesis statement: The reason for choosing him for this paper is he was one of the greatest leaders, he always sticks to what he wants to do even though he knew he will have to face consequences and was known as a very honest person thus, he falls under democratic leadership style.
Topic sentence: Lincoln started the cause of the union and wanted to unite the countries. For the North, it was about saving the union and keeping the United States together, making sure that the American Political experiment in the democrat party did not fail. Evidence & citing: “He insisted that no state had the right to disrupt the national authority or to challenge the fundamental concept of majority rule ”. No minority has the right to break up a government. Commentary: Most Americans believed that the United States and its democracy in progress was and would be an example to the rest of the world. Evidence & citing: But if the United States failed. Lincoln said it would go far to prove the incapability of people to govern themselves. Commentary: Lincoln meant that the United States was a large and advanced democracy on the earth. Women and Africam American people couldn’t vote or serve in elected office. It was a small democracy but it was bigger in other places in the country. Americans saw that as a great American achievement. Democracy was based on free and fair elections. If you lose an election, you go off and form your own nation. If that happened, then the United States would fail as a country. It would show that democratic forms of the United States cannot last very long in history and in real life. “If we fail it will go far to prove the incapability of the people to govern themselves”.
Evidence & citing: Abraham Lincoln was well known for his social skills, communication skills with people and for accepting criticism from people and taking advice for his own good. Evidence & citing: He was also known for his courage on top of that he was a knowledgeable man and was good at gaining trust from people. Commentary: He was good at motivating people, was a very honest man and was good at taking up the responsibility and directing the people.
One of Lincoln's greatest leadership traits was his good communication skills which helped him to be a successful leader. He was a very communicative person, he knew how to talk with people and knew how to make the people listen to his talk by telling stories through which he could convey the message. Commentary: Being a leader one must be essential to establish oneself as a good communicator and know how to convey a message clearly so that people can trust with their wholeheartedly. Abraham was a very honest man, he knew how to deal with the circumstances and was very truthful to the people. Lincoln did what he thought was right according to the situations and this way it led to his success. He was a very responsible person. He took at the mistakes as his own and work towards achieving it. He acknowledged all the mistakes of his deputy and he shared every achievement without keeping himself. He made sure his deputy were praised and given credit for their work so that they won’t get discouraged and would continue to work for him.
Lincoln was a responsible leader, he took account of everything his deputy did and apologized for the mistake his deputy did. He followed the democratic leadership style. He did what people wanted to do by being fair in every situation. He was a supportive leader and he motivated his deputy to take part in decision making and had a lot of trust in his deputy. Through this, they feel motivated to do their work and had a lot of efficiency in their work. Lincoln's democratic leadership style was successful, as he was the kind of person who always motivates others and made them have faith in whatever he believed. Commentary: Lincoln always respected other opinions and always included his deputy ideas and strategies in decision making. Through his actions and his leadership style, he ended the slavery system and brought freedom in the country.
Conclusion paragraph: To conclude the essay, being a leader holds a lot of responsibility. Therefore, following the Democratic leadership is very effective. Through this leadership style, every member is included in the work and their thoughts and plans are being considered in the decision making. When they are informed about everything they feel more included and they trust more in the leader. Every member is motivated to work in a group, when the members are being credited for their work and when achievements were shared, they are interested in working together and there will be high efficiency in the work.
