“Process during which large member if small molecules are combine to form macro molecules is called polymerization. Small molecules are called monomers and large molecules are called polymers”.
Polymerization are divide into two types.
Process during which large number of small molecules (monomers) undergo self addition reaction to form macro molecules which is called addition polymer.
Process during which large number of molecules(monomers) combine to form macro molecules with the elimination of side product usually water is called condensation polymerization and polymer is called co-polymer.
TYPES OF POLYMERS:
The first commercially produced polymer is also the simplest and most common, polyethene. Its systematic name is poly (ethene) meaning it is a polymer made from the monmer, ethene. Ethene is a small molecule containing two carbon atoms linked by a double bond nad four hydrogen atoms, two bonded to each other.
Polypropene, a synthetic resin built up by the polymerization of propylene. One of the important family of polyolefin resins, polypropylene is molded or extruded into many plastic products in which toughness, flexibility, light weight, and heat resistance are required.
One of the most common molecules in biochemistry is a try of polymer called protein. These are made up of monomers known as amino acids and they are joined by an amide linkage. These linkages are made by a carboxylic group reacting with an amine group forming the linkage and eliminating water.this linkage is the basis of anotherrtype of
Nylons are made using two types of monomer. These are dicarboxylic acids and diamines. The first nylon synthesized used one monomer with a chain of four cabons with a carboxylic acid group on each end and another monomer with a six carbon chain with a amine group on each end.
The ester linkage is a carboxylic acid group where the hydrongen has been replaced by the carbon of another organic group. Polyesters are widely used as fibres for clothes and also for many drinks bottles. They are also ysed to make thin films for applications such as video tape.
