Character Traits

Ally is introduced to readers as a timid, misunderstood, and helpless child who believes that she is stupid. She has mediocre grades, hates school and feels isolated from her classmates. However, as the story progresses, we see Ally’s character traits change as she begins to realize that her learning disability does not define her. One of her most admirable traits is her persistence. Despite her constant struggles, Ally never gives up. She finds her passion for art and writing and begins to realize that she has talents that are beyond academic achievements. Ally’s creativity, sensitivity, and observational skills are some of her most significant strengths, and she uses them to her advantage.

Another vital character trait that develops within Ally is her empathy. Ally, who was a social outcast, is quick to notice and help other people who are struggling with their own issues. She identifies with students who are labeled 'troublemakers' and 'underachievers’ and realizes that some of them, like her, have learning disabilities or problems at home. She takes Leo, a boy with a reputation for being troublesome and excluded from the classroom, under her wing and guides him, showing him the patience and understanding that she wishes she had received. Ally's empathy, understanding, and willingness to put aside her own problems to help others serve as a reminder to readers that kindness and compassion can change lives.

Perhaps Ally’s most prominent character trait is her determination. Her perseverance is remarkable, and she refuses to give up even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. She eventually gains the courage to ask for help, and with the guidance of her teacher, Mr. Daniels, Ally learns coping strategies that make reading and writing easier for her. Her determination pays off in the end when she competes in the science fair and delivers a presentation so good that it wins the second prize. Ally's journey teaches us that the path to success is not always smooth, but giving up should never be an option.
