Personal Career Analysis: Marketing Management

The career that I researched was marketing, specifically marketing management. Marketing management is the organizational discipline which focuses on the practical application of marketing orientation, techniques and methods inside enterprises and organizations and on the management of a firm's marketing resources and activities. I am interested in this field because I love the way a company's marketing team comes up funny commercials and slogans to promote a new product and I have always wanted to be a part of the process of marketing a business or a product.

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, “media marketing and marketing managers work with department heads or staff to discuss topics such as budgets and contracts, marketing plans, and the selection of advertising media. Plan promotional campaigns such as contests, coupons, or giveaways. Plan advertising campaigns, including which media to advertise in, such as radio, television, print, online media, and billboards” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). I am very interested in marketing management, this will allow me to participate in the promotion and sale of a new product. I will be able to work alongside many art directors, sales agents, and financial staff members as well. I will also be able to travel the world to meet with different clients (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). Because the work of advertising, promotions, and marketing managers directly affects a firm’s revenue, people in these occupations typically work closely with top executives.

For me to be a forensic marketing manager, “I will need my bachelor’s degree in marketing as well as experience in sales” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). I plan on accomplishing my educational requirements by pursuing a major in marketing at Austin Peay State University. I will complete all required courses to receive my bachelor’s degree in marketing. After receiving my bachelor’s degree, I plan on going to East Tennessee State University to receive my master’s degree. There are many upper division marketing courses in the Austin Peay State University Undergraduate Bulletin that will help me be as successful as possible. MKT 3010- Principles of Marketing will teach me the basics of marketing (Austin Peay State University, 2017). MKT 3510- Consumer & Market Behavior will teach me how to study the different ways people make decisions about what they buy, want, need, or act regarding a product, service, or company (Austin Peay State University, 2017). Both courses will benefit me by helping improve my knowledge of the job that will help me with my actual field of study.

The job outlook for employment in advertising, promotions, and marketing managers is increasing rapidly, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, “advertising, promotions, and marketing manager positions are highly desirable and are often sought by other managers and experienced professionals. With internet-based advertising becoming more important, marketing managers who can navigate the digital world should have the best prospects” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). The Occupational Outlook Handbook goes on to state that, “employment of advertising, promotions, and marketing managers is projected to grow 9 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Employment growth will vary by occupation” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). In the journal article Competencies of Marketing Managers in South Africa published in 2008 states, “if I want to succeed in this field I will need to learn the three ways to analyze the marketing competence” (Melaia, 2008 p. 233). The three ways I will need to learn is, “the individual level consisting of technical, human, and conceptual skills. The organizational focus on broadening and deepening individual marketing competencies. The organizational level focused on corporate competences and strategic (Melaia, 2008 p. 233). This article also states the skills I will need for marketing, “the ten top desired skills identified as very important for entry-level marketing staff are communication, creativity, analytical skills, numeracy, resilience, entrepreneurship, initiative, organizational skills, planning, and selling” (Melaia, 2008 p. 234). This article is important because it names the top skills that companies are looking for in new hires. If I on mastering these skills and studying more about the three marketing competencies there is no way I will not succeed in this career field. Excel I can do miraculous things with it when it comes to fraudulent activity and other aspects of accounting. After researching more for marketing management, I have decided that I will continue pursuing this career here at Austin Peay State University. Marketing management still interests me so much because companies will continue to produce new products and will need someone in charge of promoting them. The job outlook for marketing management is expected to increase throughout these nest couple of years. is great, which will give me the chance to get a job in this field a lot easier than if the job outlook was decreasing. One step that I can take this year to help prepare myself for this job is stop being shy and quiet around others and study a lot more to improve my test taking skills. Doing those things will help stay on track to receive my degree.
