Many women have an experience that wish to transform to ideal looks and become popular in the community. In general, women have tendency to pay attention their looks and mostly women have body dissatisfaction differently. For improving this dissatisfaction, having cosmetic surgery is very popular way to solve the issue of having body dissatisfaction. Historically, cosmetic surgery is not so much popular because of morality issue, but these day community environments are changing and people start accepting to have the surgery. Yet, even community starts accepting surgery, it is not good solution to improve body dissatisfaction for women because the risks can be ruin women’s quality of life and medical regulation are also not really contributed to women and also cosmetic surgery have possibility to carry the mental disorder instead of improving self-esteem.
Cosmetic surgery can become women more beautiful but how many women actually know the surgery has serious risks for harming women. Cosmetic surgery is the medical surgery and it has risk of leading woman died from medical complications. According to Casey Holley, author of Disadvantage of Plastic Surgery, “Plastic surgery, like any surgery, carries a risk of medical complications, including death. Some of the most common risks associated with plastic surgery are infection, severe bleeding, nerve damage that may lead to numbness, tissue death (necrosis), fluid collecting around the site (seroma) and bruising in the area (hematoma)”. In addition, Linda Ray, the author of Positive and Negative Benefits of Plastic Surgery, observed that any small procedure has big complication. These facts indicate that cosmetic surgery has the problem of harming woman or has possibilities to kill women from medical risks. Even though the reason why cosmetic surgery is very popular in US that not much women knows that cosmetic surgery has serious risk to kill women with serious compliments. For example, the guardian reports that Pauline Bainbrige, an ordinary housewife age of 50 and live in United Kingdom, had the liposuction surgery on her thighs and she was dead within 48 hours because of blood clot which is common complication of cosmetic surgery. She and her husband thought that cosmetic surgery could not kill anyone and they never expected the cosmetic surgery could harm patients. This case example shows not much women know cosmetic surgery’s risk and they believe cosmetic surgery will improve their looks with no harmful issue. However some patients believe that cosmetic surgery will make better looks, the surgery can be ruin, harm and break women’s quality of life and this is not good way to improve women’s body dissatisfaction.
While trying to become more beautiful from the surgery, the cosmetic surgery can reduce women’s confidence to looks and carries serious mental illness called Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). Cosmetic surgery is the way of becoming more beautiful but sometimes women start addicted to surgery and try to reach ideal body image itself and even become serious mental illness that called body dysmorphic disorder. Megan M Kelly, professional education from mental disorder environment, mentions that “cosmetic surgery is a commonly sought treatment for individuals with BDD, with 26%-40% of individuals with BDD pursuing cosmetic surgery”(1). This indicates that approximately 25 to 40% BDD pacients are having cosmetic surgery for treatment body dissatisfaction disorder. Also, Megan points out that if women have body dysmorphic disorder, women never stop doing surgery because BDD carries serious obsessions for their own body. From these incidents, the cosmetic surgery is not good solution for improving women’s body dissatisfaction because women tried to make high self-esteem from the surgery’s outcome but the surgery could make in trouble women of addiction and take into mental illness.
The cosmetic surgery’s can be killed woman because the surgery’s doctor doesn’t have any regulation for protecting women. Recently this is the biggest issue that the cosmetic surgery’s doctors are lacking of training to operate the surgery because the doctors only require to have medical degree. Generally women think the doctor is the specialist of medial surgery so they don’t suspect the doctors are lacking of medical training or less specialized. According to Merrllyn Walton, the professor of medical education in University of Sydney, “Cosmetic surgery is not a recognized branch of medicine, so operators are only required to have a general medical degree. These doctors are able to operate in an environment with few minimum standards and no inspection system to ensure patients are not at increased risk of harm”(1). This indicates that doctor has no regulations and this incident seems to affect women strongly negative. Also, the doctor with a few experience and operate cosmetic surgery is not only very dangerous situation but also they may produce poor outcome as well. For example, usa today reports that Kellee Lee Howard, who is 32 years old women in Miami, died during the liposuction surgery because the doctor isn’t board certified in any medical school. The reason why this tragedy happened that cosmetic surgery doctor’s regulation is very unclear and weak. These backgrounds are very negative affect for women who want to have cosmetic surgery. Therefore cosmetic surgery can’t be good solution to improve their body dissatisfaction because the surgeons seem to produce negative outcome of women with no regulation.
However cosmetic surgery has multiple problems, some researcher support cosmetic surgery has become increasingly popular and women are satisfied with the outcome of the surgery. Usually women are satisfied with the outcome and improve their self-esteem or self-worth. According to David J Castle, Roberta J Honigman and Katharine A Phillips, all the authors are professional education about body image, explain that “Overall, the studies suggest that most patients were pleased with the outcome and felt better about themselves. This was particularly the case for women undergoing reduction mam- moplasty”. The authors indicate that cosmetic surgery improve the women’s body dissatisfaction and reduce stress and negative thinking in their life. Although cosmetic surgery improve women’s quality of life, David B Sarwer and Canice E Crerand mention that While patients typically report satisfaction with their postop- erative result, based on existing studies, it may be too early to conclude that all procedures lead to positive psychological outcomes”. According to these authors, the cosmetic surgery can lead women to have body dysmorphic disorder or eating disorder and these risks are clearly reducing women’s self-esteem. Even though, some of body image researcher mentions that cosmetic surgery has positive effect for improving women’s self-worth, the risk of taking off the self-esteem are very serious and affect deeply to the women.
After all cosmetic surgery actually not good solution for improving body dissatisfaction because women don’t know so much risks and doctors with lacking of specialized do not contribute women also, the surgery has possibility to lead women become mental illness. Firstly, not much of women understand clearly of surgery’s risks and that can be not only ruin woman herself but also risks of complications can take off women’s natural beauty and also make women low-self-esteem. Moreover, doctors don’t have any regulation for protecting women and a lot of doctor are lacking of specialization of the surgery. These facts prevent women improving their appearance and also expose risk of producing negative outcome. In addition, the cosmetic surgery has possibilities to lead women for carrying mental illness. Women are usually have the surgery for making looks better and improving their body dissatisfaction but the surgery has psychological risk of becoming mental illness called Body Dysmorphic Disorder or eating disorder. These mental disorders will take away women’s confidence and become obsessed about their body dissatisfaction. However these risks are appeared, same researcher claims that normally women are satisfied with cosmetic surgery’s outcome and piled self-confidence more after the surgery. Yet, these researchers indicate that cosmetic surgery’s positive affection, the connection between cosmetic surgery to mental illness is very relative and effect each other. Therefore, the cosmetic surgery is not good solution for improving women’s body dissatisfaction because the risks are very serious to harm women’s quality of life, the psychological effect of cosmetic surgery take off self-confidence instead of increasing self-esteem also, doctors are not having regulation for protecting women properly.
