Abortion: the pros and cons, people's beliefs, pro-choice and pro-life decisions. Pro-choice advocates argue that women have a fundamental right to terminate their unwanted pregnancies, while most pro-life supporters believe that the fetus is a human being and that having an abortion is tantamount to murder.
Currently, there are no laws in Connecticut that ban abortion. There is no age limit and no waiting period, making it legal in Connecticut to have an abortion. In 1973, the Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade that having an abortion during the early stages of pregnancy is a constitutional right (Roe v. Wade, 1973).
Pro-life advocates maintain that a baby's life begins at conception. They argue, "That right to be born overrides the mother's right to make decisions about her body since her decision to abort affects the life of another human being, the unborn baby." To them, abortion is "murder." They insist that "It's not a choice; it's a child" and emphasize that "there are other options besides abortion, such as adoption or family parenting." They argue that "to kill an innocent baby is just not right" (Smith, 2020).
Pro-choice advocates believe that every woman has the right to terminate her unwanted pregnancies. They assert that "every woman has a basic right to make decisions that affect her body without interference from the government" (Johnson, 2019). They contend that human life begins when the fetus is capable of surviving outside the mother's womb, which occurs when the lungs, kidneys, and other critical organs are developed. In the context of Roe v. Wade, they argue that the state can prohibit abortion only after fetal viability, a standpoint they strongly support.
This is what I believe is in the best interest of women. I must add that I am pro-choice, but only in certain cases. For a woman to use abortion as a form of birth control is something I do not agree with. However, in cases where a woman has been raped, is in danger of death if she carries the baby to term, or if incest is involved, I support the option of abortion. I do not think abortion should be banned, but I do believe there should be restrictions. If someone seeks an abortion simply because they do not want the baby, then that is murder; if they have a very reasonable reason, then I believe it is justified.
If I were to take action on the issue, I would write letters to the state to express my views. I would publish a story in the newspaper to share my opinion with a broader audience. I might even visit an abortion clinic to observe the picketers, hear their opinions, and remain open-minded toward them. By engaging with different perspectives, I aim to foster a more nuanced understanding of this complex issue.
