There is a great need to understand the purpose of any written text, film or any piece that is educative in nature. With so doing, internal analysis of the text can be perfectly understood by the targeted audience. Rhetorical analysis is mostly the art of persuasion; this means the art that an author or the narrator have used in trying to persuade or appeal to the audience that he or she is communicating to. Composition as a Write of passage by Nathalie Singh-Corcoran is a text written and narrated by Nathalie Singh-Corcoran. The text narrates the frustration and the lack of interest that is shown by most of the first year college on composition. The text explains how most of them treat it as unnecessary subject not knowing that it forms the basis of very many things in their studies that they are just beginning. The author is an English Professor teaching mostly the first year college students. Most of his targeted audience is therefore the first year students that have joined the college. The main area of interest is the first year college compositions that are being written by students of all professionals. The target audience for the text extends evens those that are already working or the senior college students. The main purpose of the text is to create awareness among the first year students that the composition they are exposed to during their first years is of great essence and will serve a bigger role in their senior college years as well as in their future line of duties. This paper will look into how the author of the text has effectively demonstrated the need of compositions for the first year students by providing fruitful experiences from variety of educational fields and backgrounds.
The text clearly proves that the first year compositions form the basis and foundation of most of the written works in the entire academic life of any student. A lot of objective evidence has been used in the text to show that without strong foundation on the first year compositions on college, one has a high chance of facing a lot of difficulties completing future papers regardless of the course. Singh-Corcoran shows that “how Godwin Erekaife indicates that when she began to write reports that were technical in nature, she quickly realized that the skills that she learnt in his 101 and 102 classes were so helpful to his advantage in areas of event citations, organization and research as well”. This was a confession of a profession whose perception that the 101 and 102 classes were of waste of time to a perception that they gave experience being that he had developed a meta-awareness of writing. Godwin Erekaife who is now a chemical engineer acknowledges that knowledge does transfer. She acknowledges how the FYC have played a great role in making her efficient in preparing preliminary results from longitudinal studies.
With the use of confessions from different professionals concerning their view on FYC and how they perceive them currently has played a very big role in showing that the first year composition are a backbone to the future papers that students write in their course and later on in their careers. The author has used his expertise to enhance the credibility of his text. In the text, the author clearly shows how she had a very bad perception concerning the first year compositions. She saw them as a waste of time. She did not realize the weight that they will carry on his later life. She vividly remembers the feeling that she had at University of Arizona while she was still a first year student. Now she is teaching the same subject and she can see it in the eyes of the student the kind of disconnect that she had many years ago. She gives confessions on papers like rhetorical analysis or personal narrative that she knew she would never write about. That shows enough evidence that writing the first year composition is a stage that every student passes through. There is a common feeling among most students that they don’t serve any role. However, with his level of expertise, it is an enough indication that they are the backbone to most of the future papers that students will write. Lauren O’Connor states that after she started her first job, “she had a very tough time adapting on how to write to the tone of the business. The FYW extends in the world of work”. Lauren is just an example of one person among millions that are going through tough times writing work reports at their work place.
There are many people that have been fired from their workplace due to lack of failing to give well formatted business reports. This is very sad being that in the first year compositions, they are all taught. The author shows that with more concentration on the first year compositions, there will be a greater chance of avoiding such future problems in the workplace. The author shows that it takes a lot of time to learn how to write outside of the first year compositions. The first year is the right time to learn different kinds of compositions to have a smooth future academic life.
