Introduction

Due to coincidence, inaccurate reporting, and the need to explain the unexplainable, the legend of the Bermuda Triangle was born. Also known as the Devil’s Triangle, the Bermuda Triangle is one of the biggest mysteries of our time, with a large number of ships and planes disappearing without explanation. The most intriguing explanations to the public are those of paranormal or supernatural theories. However, the more practical explanations are natural reasons. This, nevertheless, makes the Bermuda Triangle mystery not a mystery at all.

Assessment of The Secrecies Surrounding Bermuda Triangle

There have been many reported incidents of ships and aircraft being swallowed up by the Bermuda Triangle, causing many unexplained deaths. One of the first stories associated with the triangle is that of the famous ship, the USS Cyclops. The ship made an unscheduled stop and never arrived at its destination, disappearing without a trace in 1918. There was no distress signal ever received, no wreckage ever found, and the deaths of the 306 crew members and passengers set a U.S. Naval record for loss of life not directly involving combat. Another important ship was the SS Marine Sulphur Queen, which disappeared in 1963. Again, no wreckage was ever found, and the 39 crew members were lost at sea. Lastly, Flight 19 disappeared in 1945. Five Avenger torpedo bombers set off for a routine practice, with Commander Lt. Charles Taylor in charge. During the flight, Taylor reported that his compasses were not working, leaving him and his Avengers lost. The crew soon ran out of fuel and fell into the water, exploding and leaving debris everywhere; these planes were known as “flying bombs.” This tragedy is a mystery due to Taylor’s navigational confusion and how his compass stopped working when flying over the Bermuda Triangle (Krystek, 2019). These disappearances are some of the most important reasons why the Bermuda Triangle is such a worldwide mystery.

Paranormal and Supernatural Explanations

Popular culture has attributed these disappearances to paranormal activity and supernatural explanations. Some believe that there is a time warp in the Bermuda Triangle, although the exact location is unknown. UFOs and alien astronauts are two major speculated causes. It’s believed that the triangle is a collection station where beings from another world take our people, planes, ships, and other objects to study them or save them from a holocaust on their own planet. Some consider that ships and planes are even sent to another dimension. Sea monsters contribute to these unnatural explanations, supposedly sinking the ships. Death rays from Atlantis are another theory, with people supposing that magic crystals left from the time of Atlantis cause the ships to sink (“Bermuda Triangle,” 2020). Furthermore, the captivating paranormal and supernatural explanations are what drive people to learn more about the Bermuda Triangle.

Natural Explanations

Documented evidence shows that a large percentage of the incidents were inaccurately reported, and many agencies state that the disappearances in the region are similar to any other area of the ocean. Compasses are one of the primary causes of incidents in the triangle, which have natural magnetic variations that interfere with the magnetic poles. It is also natural for compasses to change directions when placed in certain locations. In times of war or piracy, deliberate actions may contribute to a missing ship. Some ships were illegally captured, and acts of piracy were common in the past. The Gulf Stream’s current can act like a river, reaching up to six miles per hour, and because of this, small planes that land on the ocean can be carried away. Another cause could be treacherous waves, which can definitely sink a ship, sending it into a watery grave. Powerful storms, such as hurricanes, can no doubt be deemed responsible for causing some incidents. Lastly, human error is one of the most suggested explanations for the loss of aircraft and vessels. Humans make mistakes, and miscalculations can easily be a reason for the disappearances (McElwee, 2018). These natural explanations are what the public does not want to hear, but they represent the truth.

Conclusion

The legend of the Bermuda Triangle seems to be a great obscurity, but because of mistakes and imprecise reporting, the mysteries aren’t really mysteries at all. There are countless numbers of ships and planes that have strangely disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle, but the majority have a legitimate explanation. Society wants to believe that these disappearances were caused by supernatural reasons, only because it makes the legend more exciting. However, the true accounts of these vanishing ships and planes are due to natural causes like powerful storms, and not UFOs or aliens. It’s because of the fascination with paranormal activities that the legend of the Bermuda Triangle was born. Without these supernatural explanations, the triangle would be just like any other area of the sea.
