With an immensely assorted population that exists in the United States today, our nation is a mixture of all the diverse societies around the globe. Everyone is unique in their own way. Culture can refer to such a significant number of various things like the experiences you may face, values, language, traditions, food, politics, and religion. In which the background is shared by a gathering of individuals know as your family. It’s a lifestyle that has been passed along by communication and impersonation beginning with one generation to the next (Mcdowell).
My cultural experiences that have been passed down in my family consist of going to church every Sunday I come from a Catholic background. Going to parties every Saturday like Quinceañera, which is a celebration for a girls transition from childhood to a young woman. Also attending baptisms parties just enjoying being together with all our family. We celebrate the day of the child which is super fun, my aunts usually buy toys and the younger kids play competitive games and whoever wins receives a prize. On November first and second, we celebrate our family members that have passed away by making them an altar placing all their favorites food and remembering all the good things about them.
During the month of December, we celebrate the appearance of the Virgin Mary. We do a re-enactment of Mary and Joseph’s search for a lodging in Bethlehem called Posadas. Those are some traditions that have been passed down in my family. Cross-culture awareness is understanding the differences between their own culture and people from other countries or other backgrounds, beliefs, etc (Morris). By living in a borderless world people are able to connect with anyone in the world and they’re able to see all the unique characteristics of any national culture. People have better access to greater knowledge, data, and multiple viewpoints. But also have to be aware of the different gestures each culture have because they have so many different meanings (Morris).
Being cross-culturally aware can bring you so many good benefits. Help promote clear lines of communication and better relationships. People able to develop great people skills that apply into all walks of life. By learning the influence of the culture, hidden factors upon people’s behavior, and understand how to listen. By becoming a great listener, people naturally become good communicators. When people are limited in cross-cultural awareness they struggle in communication, and they aren’t well at be observant (Mcdowell).
If people aren’t aware of all the different cultures around them, they will miss out in so many opportunities’ whether if it’s for a job, developing a new business, or learning new things to fulfill their own necessities. Sometimes not being aware of other cultures, can defiantly get you in trouble if people are visiting another country they may be greeting someone and they can come off being rude when you really didn’t mean it just because that cultural awareness. A culture is built on more than just food, music, art, and clothing. It’s foundation includes stories, values and beliefs passed down through generations. Learn to value a culture’s contribution. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, people generally appreciate the interest and enjoy sharing information about the nation and its culture.
