Whether, you feel school should start later in the morning, or should not. There are many perspectives that need to be kept in mind. It’s not only about the students/teachers it’s also about the parents. With this in mind, why do we still start school at 7:50 in the morning?

“To maximize the effectiveness of the learning process, school start times should be pushed back an hour or more across the board to improve the sleep kids get and help them do better in their studies.” It’s been proven in many studies that teenagers do better with a later start to the day.

Many people would agree we should start a high school morning around 10 AM. This would allow students and teachers to have a more calm mornings, creating less stress for both. Most students have after school activities or jobs. Having them getting home after 10, most people would say they don’t go to bed right when they get home. We must think about them eating dinner taking a shower and doing homework, which can lead them not going to bed until after 1 AM. And it’s not only students, teachers also have to stay after school teach after school activities and or grade papers, They have lives too. A good night's sleep does not happen when you go to bed after 1 AM and have to get up anywhere from 5:30 AM to 7:00 AM. Studies show that teenagers need about 7 1/2hr to 10 hours of sleep each night. The pros of starting school after 10, result in extra sleep. And the right amount of sleep that teens should be getting.

“Due to extracurricular activities such as athletics, music, and even jobs, a later school start time is not realistic. If school starts later, it will also end later, giving less time for students to pursue important activities after school.” Any students not all have after school activities they have to deal with on a day-to-day basis, Yes people can argue that it’s their choice to do these activities. But nowadays what we do when we are younger is what colleges and future jobs look for. It is not uncommon for a 14-year-old freshman in high school to have a job, and I am not saying the only freshman have jobs. Anyone from age 14 and up in Nebraska could find a job. Many household need that extra help from the child with getting extra money to pay bills. And if parents had to redo their schedule to match school schedules it would be chaos, most parents have work in the morning helping them get the students on time in the morning. If the school started after 10 AM, most parents would have to change their schedule to make sure their students are there. And other students may have to stay after school, because their parents aren’t off work yet to get them. Buses are possible but often people aren’t approved. After school Activities are common in high school years. Not only giving the child a more athletic advantage but also putting them in the way of scholarships, which may be something they need. It would be nearly impossible to cram all of that in to one night. Starting school late means ending school later, resulting in getting home later. It would be a never ending cycle either way. Starting later in the day at school interferes with parents’ working days, encourages students to stay up late, and would cause problems with after-school practices for sports. Delaying high school start times could pose problems with bus schedules, after-school activities, and sporting events for the entire area. There are many cons with school starting school later, resulting in afterschool activities getting taken away. And not being able to have a job on school nights.

Starting school at a later time would help kids get the recommended hours of sleep at night, and helping them not depend on caffeine to keep them awake during the day. A delayed start time could help teens sleep during their natural sleep/wake cycles. Academic performances would rise, because students would be More alert and focused during the school days. With school starting later it would get out later as well, preventing kids from getting in trouble while their parents are at work. Because their parents would be home around the same time they got out of school. This would decrease the likelihood of teens engaging and unhealthy activities. Normal school day is about 7 1/2 hours, boarding school around 7:50 AM and getting out around 320. If we started school at 10 AM we wouldn’t get out of school until 5 PM, giving parents time to get home before their children. Those few extra hours could really help not only the parents but also the students. There are many pros in this topic, starting from more sleep and ending in healthier choices.

It is not only about the students it’s also about the parents and teachers. Teachers also have children to worry about ass to the parents of the students. They already worry about getting themselves to work on time even when the schools day starts at 7:50 AM a lot of working days would have to change drastically for both parents and teachers. Ending in The other children they have in lower grades being home alone, putting them at higher risk. This could lead to other jobs with parents being angry about them needing flexible hours. Students and lower grades would have to be put in Day cares or left home alone. This could be a huge problem for families that can’t afford that little bit of daycare. Most families depend on their older children to take care and watch the younger ones while they are at work. Yes people can argue that most high schoolers have cars and have their license, The average age for a freshman in high school is 14. Meaning they are not old enough to have vehicles, Nor Drive. Them depending on their parents for rides back-and-forth to school and school activities. Making it nearly impossible for younger high schoolers to get by without their parents. It would not be smart to start school at a later time due to these interferences, not only would parents not be home to be with their younger children. But the younger children would have to be put in daycare or stay home alone. When thinking about later school it’s not only about the high schoolers it’s also about the parents, teachers, and younger children!

Starting school later could benefit and also have risks. Benefiting in the way of more sleep, and A calmer day. But puts not only younger children at risk but also the parents. If we started school late our entire society would have to adapt to that. Making a normal shift for Parents revolve around the student school day. And also having to push back younger children school days as well. But everyone could benefit from a little extra sleep, it’s just how our society would reflect off of it.
