I wrote this biography on Roger Federer with the intent to educate fans and mainly young athletes about the accomplishments of Federer. He is a widely known athlete who has won multiple awards and championships in Tennis. I wanted to highlight aspects that some people might not know about him, like how he transformed a negative time in his life to give him strength how much he gave back to the community and people after winning so much.
Roger Federer is a tennis player who is acknowledged by almost everyone to be one of the best players of all time. Born on the 8 of August in 1981 in Basel, Switzerland Federer loved sports in his childhood, specifically basketball, badminton and football. It was at the age of 10 when Federer started receiving coaching from Adolf Kacovsky. At a young age Federer’s trainer said his talent was undeniable. Federer was also laughed at when he said he wanted to be the best player ever. Early on Federer was a ‘hothead’ on-court wasting his energy by getting annoyed with himself however it wasn’t until he met Peter Carter who helped him control his temper and now he is recognised as one of the calmest tennis players.
At the beginning of his career, he began to win over and over again. In 1998 it was the boys Wimbledon tournament, he made it to the final in the US Open as well as making the final at the Marseilles Open and winning his first title at the Milan indoor tournament in 2001. However, in 2002 disaster struck, his junior coach Peter Carter tragically died in a car crash. Federer was devastated, his coach’s death was said to be a wake-up call, but he did not dwell on it. Soon his coach’s death became his motivation he wanted to remember him and to implement the advice he had given. So from then Federer’s hot temper on court was quickly gone. One year later, a different player, he won his first grand slam at Wimbledon. That was the victory that gave him world number 2. Then in 2004 he won three more Grand Slam singles titles which he was the first to do since Mats Wilander in 1988.
In 2007 he beat Nadal in an exhilarating match to give him 5 Wimbledon titles, the second player since Bjorn Borg. However in 2011 was the first time Federer didn’t win a grand slam for quite some time. Clearly evident from the rise of other starts like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and others. In 2012 he made a return winning his 7th grass title, a gold medal in the Olympics doubles but lost to Andy Murray in the singles. Federer’s milestones began to slow down showing his human limitations and there were growing doubts about his performance. He was still recognised as an extremely versatile and all-round player. Through his success, Federer has become one of the best-paid sportsmen however he continues to put his money to numerous charities even founding his own charity the Roger Federer Foundation. Also unknown to many in 2006 Federer was appointed a goodwill ambassador by UNICEF. Reaching the age of 36 Federer successfully became the oldest ATP world number one after defending his Australian title in 2018. Federer was also argued to have taken tennis to new levels of skill which is now referred to as the “Tennis Golden Age”.
