When his duties finished he returned and he was rewarded for his diplomatic activities with a trust to become the Customs Controller. in 1377 and 1388, Chaucer was involved in more diplomatic missions so Chaucer did not have much time to write poetry. And In 1385 he applied for a temporary leave. For the next four years he lived in Kent but worked as peace justice and later became a Member of Parliament, rather than focusing on his writing. When Philippa died in 1387, Chaucer was having difficulties in finances. He must continue to work in the public service to earn a living and pay off the accumulated debt that continues to grow. And after that, Chaucer worked as a diplomat, representing Britain in France and Italy.
