We All Fall Down by Robert Cormier is a complicated book. It takes place in Wickburge and Burnside Massachusetts, some time in the 80 s or 90 s. It is narrated by three different people in first person. One of those people is Jane Jerome, she is a 15 year-old girl who lives in a house that got trashed by four people. Her sister was knocked into a coma by being thrown down a flight of stairs by the trasher Harry Flowers. Another narrator was Mickey Stallings, a.k.a. The Avenger . The Avenger s age is 11 years old but Mickey is 41. This makes no sense to me but when Mickey killed Vaughn Matterson, he became The Avenger. He saw the whole trashing and that's what started The Avenger thing. After it was over, he said that he would avenge the house. The Avenger has a big role in this book and is my favorite character. The last narrator is Buddy Walker. Buddy is a trasher. He was drunk at the time but was there and didn t stop the trashing from taking place. The three characters all end up having something to do with the trashing, Buddy; who was a trasher, Jane; who was living in the trashed house and Mickey; who was the only witness of the trashing.
Later in the book Buddy and Jane meet. Jane and Buddy both feel that they were the perfect people for each other. They start going out. Buddy feels weird with her sometimes because he knows that she will find out sooner or later about him and his involvement with the trashing. One day, Mickey saw Jane and Buddy together and remembered that Buddy was a trasher. The next day Mickey paid Amos Dalton ten dollars to lead Jane into a shack, so Mickey got her tied up and planed to kill her. He was in rage and explains to her how he saw Buddy and that he killed Vaughn Matterson and how that made him The Avenger. Jane convinced Mickey that it was he who killed his grandfather and that it was he who was in that room, not the 11 year old avenger. This makes him realize that he was doing the killing and he slit his wrists and died.
Buddy found out about the incident with Mickey and Jane, he tried to call her several times but couldn't reach her. When she finally called, he was excited to hear her voice again. She told him to meet her at her house, and he did so. When she opened the door he knew that it was over, she knew. His efforts to keep the relationship together failed and he walked out of her house with his head hung low. A week or so later the evil Harry Flowers called Jane. He told her that yes, Buddy was with him but he was drunk and that when Buddy's parents split up he had taken advantage of him. He said all this because he said I owe him this call. She hung up the phone. Three months later Buddy met Jane in the mall by accident and the voice changes to third person. They met face to face and they calmly talked to each other Jane said she had to leave and Buddy in his state of depression said It was beautiful there for a while, wasn t it, Jane? and she said back to him Was it? and there the book came to an end.
Key event #1 - Buddy s parents separate and he goes to the mall where he meets Harry Flowers.
Key event #2 - The trashing takes place in the Jerome s house and Karen falls down a flight of stairs and is knocked into a coma while Mickey watches the whole thing.
Key event #3 - Mickey kills Vaughn Matterson and becomes the 11 year old named The Avenger.
Key event #4 - Jane and Buddy meet and start dating.
Key event #5 - Jane gets tricked into going in a shack that Mickey (who thinks he s The Avenger) is in. She gets tied up to a chair and he tells her about Buddy and how he is The Avenger and not Mickey. Jane convinces Mickey that he killed his grandfather and not The Avenger. He then slits his wrists and dies right before the police come in to save Jane.
Key event #6 - Jane talks to Buddy about what happened and that she knew and how there relationship was over. Buddy left the house, broken hearted and starts drinking heavier than before.
My feelings for this, and other Robert Cormier books are strong. I think that Robert Cormier is the best young adult author alive right now and his works are very great. This book is very good. I liked it because of the style of writing that Robert Cormier used in it. This and most other of his books are confusing, but in a way that it is not bothersome. This book had a lot of surprises in it and it was a book that I couldn t put down. Everything in this book was explained at the end and was explained very well. One thing in this book that I would like to point out is the city of Monument MA. Monument is the city that the Jerome family previously lived in. It is also the city that Adam, from I Am The Cheese, (also by Robert Cormier) lived in previously from the bike ride. This brings up a lot of questions in my mind but it has to be a city that Robert Cormier has some relation to.
