In his documentary, Bowling for Columbine, Moore illustrates different reasons associated with the violent nature of American society. The documentary was motivated by two high school students named Dylan and Eric, who went for a shooting spree, thus killing a number of their classmates before they went bowling. Therefore, the main reasons for the violent behavior in the US as per Moore in his documentary; are growing up in a violent environment, failure to embrace gun control principles, and that each citizen has a way of easily accessing a gun because the US society is known to be violent.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

First, the Columbine shooting incident is attributed to the failure of the American government to embrace gun control principles, which gave teenagers access to guns. In his interview with Lockheed Martin, one of the largest weapon makers, Moore depicts that the government does not regulate the selling of weapons to people even though they have not been licensed. As such, they were being sold even near schools, which led to easy access by the students.

Further, American society is violent in nature. The young are copying some traits from the old. At the same time, they are involved in watching some television programs which expose them to such violent characteristics. As such, they copy them. For instance, from the documentary, a six-year-old boy shoots a 6-year-old girl in Flint, Moore’s hometown (Bradshaw par. 6). He explains that it was the failure of the boy’s mother to take care of her gun, which he gained access. Since the boy had been exposed to some knowledge on how to use the gun over the television, he exploited that experience, thus killing the girl.

Similarly, in American society, each person could easily have access to guns and that American culture has a violent history. This was depicted in his interview with Charlton Heston, who was the National Rifle Association chair. From the different examples illustrated from the documentary, it is notable that any person can easily access regardless of his or her social status or if they have a license or not.
