Hearing my heartbeat for the first time through a stethoscope at the age of ten provoked my curiosity towards learning more about the functions of our complex human body. Our human body is composed of many different systems yet they work cooperatively together. This fact increased my inquisitiveness and my love for biology.
This love for biology made me pursue medicine in spite of knowing that it is challenging. Two years back my cousin gave birth to a beautiful girl child. She was diagnosed with imperforated anus and renal agenesis at the time of birth for which she was hospitalised for months. During my visit to the hospital, I noticed not only my niece but there were several children who were fighting against even more serious illness in the incubators. It gave me an opportunity to know the importance of doctors in a human’s life. Our school organised a basic life skills training which briefed us on extremely valuable skills like CPR and first aid.
Moreover volunteering at an autism school for children during my summer break gave me an insight about their health, activities and hardships. The doctors and teachers at the intuition imparted rigorous training to aid the development and betterment for the future of the students which made me firm on my decision on taking up medicine. These experiences not only inspired me to cure diseases but also aroused the desire to heal humans for happy living. I have successfully kept an equal balance between academics and non-academics interest. Helping in organising stage events at school has enhanced my organisational and leadership skills. At high school I realized that teamwork is a significant part of my sporting commitments. Participation in the gavel club session at my school has helped me to enhance my communicational skills. Equal involvement in all the art competition at school contributed towards the increasing my creativity.
Having the privilege of residing and being brought up in Oman since childhood, I have never stumbled across the struggles of life. Yet, whenever I travel back to my home country, India. I get to witness the real means of struggles which include poverty, poor sanitation and inadequate living condition of the people. I believe that being a doctor can help me bring good changes in these people’s life. Taking up medicine requires a lot of dedication and hard work but I’m determined to withstand all these hardships and become a doctor who brings difference in people’s life.
