Today, I would love to talk about the basis of something very interesting and important to all of us. In fact, without it, nothing else would function the way it should. It cuts across culture, religion, race, and so on. It's that important.
And what's this important thing to all? Well, before I give it: could you please imagine waking up this morning not being able to utter a word to anybody. Just being mute. Just dumb. To be dumb means: Unable to speak; lacking power of speech. Being unable to speak would probably be the worst thing that could happen to you. Wouldn't it?
Sometimes, I imagine what life would be if I couldn't speak. It would be one thing I might not be able to stand. It would be very terrible. Do you get the picture now? It's quite obvious that nobody can do without communication. Communication is a very huge concept. We communicate to really function with each other, and without it, life would be very difficult! What is communication? Communication is the act or fact of communicating anything; transmission; the concept or state of exchanging data or information between entities. According to Smith and Johnson (2022), "communication is the bridge that connects individuals, enabling them to share and build ideas collectively" (p. 45).
When we communicate, we exchange ideas and concepts. It's mainly based on the exchange of opinions. Now, because communicating is very important, we cannot do without it. There are many things that make communication successful, and among them are: channel, receiver, sender, and so on. Without those things, communication is not complete.
Sender: The sender of the message is the person who conceives the idea. She is the initiator of the whole communication process. For example, if you want to ask a person for a pen and then you walk to the individual and say, "Please, can you lend me your pen?" When you ask that question, you have begun a whole process of communication because your request sets the tone for the whole process. You are the sender.
Receiver: The receiver is the person who gets the impression from the sender and thinks up a response. Looking at that example again; the other person asked for a pen is the receiver. He is the one who gets the information and replies. He is generally known as the receiver!
Channel: Channel is the way through which the information is passed to the recipient, otherwise known as the receiver. Some information is passed to other people through different means like: through the television, radio, newspaper, and so many other means. As highlighted by Brown (2023), "the effectiveness of communication often hinges on selecting the appropriate channel for the message" (p. 78).
In conclusion, communication is an indispensable part of our lives. It not only enables us to express our needs and desires but also allows us to build relationships and collaborate effectively. Understanding its components and importance is crucial for enhancing our personal and professional interactions.
