What I know and have learned is that we need to have compassion. Compassion makes everything fit in place. It creates a harmony of unity among people, making us one in reaching a peaceful world. The world today is so cruel. Leaders are unfair, having two perspectives on justice — one for the poor and another for the rich. However, leaders are not the only ones who are cruel; people are also crying out for change while being cruel to each other and to our Mother Nature. They continue to judge others and remain ignorant, not respecting those who are disabled. We should not be harsh to each other. Disabled people are often the most capable, achieving amazing feats that some do not expect them to accomplish. Instead, we should help them and treat them with kindness. Compassion helps us see beyond someone’s or something’s pain. It allows us to understand that everything has a reason, and we should help ease the pain or at least be present with them through it (Nussbaum, 2001).
Compassion is not, and should not be, limited to our concern for each other. It is not only about how we care for our fellow humans. Compassion also extends to our natural environment and our country. Our nature needs our care and protection; it needs us to conserve it. We should not exploit the resources nature offers because, ultimately, we will suffer the consequences. Our motherland also requires our compassion. Every country needs the nationalism of its citizens to preserve its culture, ensuring that the spirit of its people is not lost. A country needs its people to have a purpose. Furthermore, compassion towards one's country ignites pride in national achievements. There are many interpretations of "wound" that we can consider here: the physical, emotional, and mental wounds of individuals, the wounds of our Mother Nature, and the wounds of our motherland. If each of us is compassionate enough, we can heal all of these. We can heal each other and everything around us. All we need is to see love in everything. What we need is kindness and faith in humanity (Singer, 2011).
To summarize, the value I will hold onto every day throughout my life is compassion. I’ve learned that we should not be ignorant of the events occurring around us. We should be aware and understand the situation. By doing so, we can help improve the situation. There is always kindness within each of us. Let it grow and touch the hearts of others. Let there be peace in our world, and the key lies within ourselves. Let us be compassionate to everyone and everything. We still have hope for a peaceful world (Armstrong, 2010).
