Critical Analysis of The Stories in Line to Discrimination

Introduction

Discrimination is a predominant phenomenon that has been experienced in daily life during the normal process of interaction between different people. Discrimination is defined as the process of mistreating people or particular individuals due to some specific features which they possess. Such kind of features forms the basis under which discrimination is done against people (Melanie 79). Discrimination has mostly been observed against characteristics such as gender reassignment, sexual orientation, age, disability, marriage, and race, or even religion. Some individuals have also faced unlawful discrimination due to belonging to a particular race.

Most individuals usually have faced humiliation and have experienced very low self-esteem due to discrimination. In a further expansion of the concept of discrimination based on the stories provided, it is worth noting that people have customarily experienced six main types of discrimination, which encompasses indirect prejudice, direct discrimination, and discrimination by perception, discrimination by association, victimization as well as harassment (Melanie 89). The present paper will thus offer a more comprehensive critical analysis of the discrimination, as shown by the stories presented. It will further provide a link and instances of how perception is displayed in the stories submitted.

Critical Analysis of the Stories in Line to Discrimination

As earlier mentioned, discrimination has been experienced in most occasions by varying kinds of individuals in different scenarios. Many people have been negatively affected by this kind of discrimination, and this has impacted the cognitive capabilities and mental capacity (Melanie 79). In offering a fundamental analysis of the stories presented, it is imperative to commence the investigation by the story of the four women, which was told by the big-Eyed women. In a keen analysis of the story, an observation is made on the aspect of discrimination based on the roles which the women had to perform. In this instance, women are only observed as the caretakers who should get married and take good care of their husbands as they make an effort to bear children.

In their tender age, the women are taught various skills and are told stories of dragons and winged horses, which are meant to expand their thinking for the more significant role which awaits them (Melanie 65). Moreover, they are forced to leave their homes and go to an unknown destination when the time of marriage reaches. This displays a high level of discrimination through harassment and victimization based on gender. In a further critical analysis of the story, we observe discrimination in the formal decision-making structure which existed within the family setting. In this instance, women cannot make reliable and prudent decisions without the influence of their husbands. This kind of situation undermines the autonomy of the women as such show a high level of discrimination against the female gender.

An analysis of the second story of the Handsomest Drowned Man in the world, an aspect of discrimination it comes out clearly in the way Estaben is treated upon his death. In this instance, we observe women undertaking the role of cleaning the dead body of the Estaben, as men just merry around without taking any active part. Furthermore, there is also gender-based discrimination, where women cannot be fully independent on their own. Nonetheless, some people believe that this is just a status quo that should no longer exist in the mind of the extremists (Torres, Felipe, Ana Burgos & Luis Vasco 55). The story further elaborates on how women used to depend on men, almost in every aspect some years ago. However, this is changing drastically, thus reducing the level of discrimination that has been observed in the past.

Most women, as brought out in the story, can obtain quite decent jobs that can support their families as expected. The story also elaborates that most women are to be blamed for the marital problems which have been experienced in most scenarios. In this instance, there has been an aspect of divorce, which has brought a lot of suffering to the families and children in particular (Torres, Felipe, Ana Burgos & Luis Vasco 55). However, measures have been taken to study the spouses, which will help in understanding fundamental aspects that will play a supportive role in preventing family problems such as divorces.

In an imperative analysis of the story of El Matadero, an observation of discrimination comes out clearly between the Catholics who are Christians and the Unitarians. In this story, Unitarians argue that they are being discriminated against through the building of Noah's ark, which in their perspective, belongs to the Christians (Torres, Felipe, Ana Burgos & Luis Vasco 55). In further analysis of the story, an observation is made that the Unitarians only experienced scarcity of meat, as Christians, in their view, were protected and were provided for by the church. The Unitarians also blamed Christians for God's wrath, which caused a lot of suffering to them.

The story brought out apparently that Unitarians mocked the church for the natural calamities which befell them, arguing that they had been discriminated against by them. This was observed through continued torrential rainfall, which had negative impacts on the unbelievers (Torres, Felipe, Ana Burgos & Luis Vasco 55). The story also elaborates on the aspect of discrimination when there was a rule that barred people from eating meat. The government created a feeling on the Unitarians that they are being discriminated against; thus, they could only eat meat and eggs. Any attempt to eat meat was met by sickness and curses, which befell the Unitarians.

Another critical analysis in line with the discrimination is based on the story of the New- Spain. In this story, we observe the aspect of the massacre, which was organized by the Spaniards. In this massacre, racial discrimination is triggered, based on how the bloody massacre is done to the gentle people who are not Spaniards. The people who are terrorized by such kind of group were the meek and the gentle people how had not committed any wrong (Rushforth, Brett & Paul Mapp 59). Through the land invasion, observation is done on the suffering of the people, based on racial discrimination. The discrimination on the poor is also comprehensively described in the story and the way they were forced to carry out their belongings.

Moreover, the story also intricates that the Spaniards forced the poor people to be stark naked before they unsheathed their swords and proceeded to slaughter them mercilessly (Rushforth, Brett & Paul Mapp 59). None of them escaped, and after two days, some of the victims resurfaced, soaked in blood from head to foot. Indeed the soldiers showed no mercy or any form of compassion to them. This vividly indicated a high level of victimization and harassment of innocent and poor people.

An aspect of discrimination is also displayed in the story of the Life of Juan Facundo Quiroga. In a critical analysis of this story, the emphasis is made on how the son of an inhabitant of San Juan, who made a settlement in the La Rioja. When Juan Facundo Quiroga was sent by his father to obtain a high level of learning at the native school, which involve both the aspect of writing and reading arts, it came out clearly that he faced a lot of discrimination (Juan Pablo 18). Based on the evidence obtained from the story, the aspects of perception are quite evident in how Juan Facundo Quiroga is treated. The story was intricate that stringent measures were put in place to investigate the history of Juan Facundo Quiroga and ascertain whether it was true that he came from a royal family.

Discrimination appears clearly in this concept since this kind of investigation was not conducted on all the new students, but Juan Facundo Quiroga alone. This showed discrimination based on race, which was not supposed to be purported by the school administration. Such an act of investigation created a form of threat on Juan Facundo Quiroga, which attributed him to making numerous mistakes, then later found himself in trouble (Thomas 129). He later created a scene and took it to the street out of confusion. In this instance, a conclusion can be drawn on how the racial discrimination practiced by the school management affected Juan Facundo Quiroga, as he later hid among the wild vine to evade punishments.

In a keen analysis of the story, 'Where and how the devil lost his poncho,' Adeodata Don Mentirola describes elaborately how Jesus Christ was discriminated despite his struggle to save humankind. In this instance, Adeodata Don Mentirola argues that most Christians pretended to humble themselves before God and asked for forgiveness from God, a scenario which was not sincere from their inner hearts. They could say, 'We confess our ignorance; we beg you to enlighten us. Teach us for we do not understand the true percept of Jesus Christ' (Thomas 129). Adeodata Don Mentirola explains that Jesus Christ was able to heal the sick and restore sight to the blind but was later crucified for the good things he was doing. Moreover, Adeodata Don Mentirola described that people liked his divine teachings and could roll out the red carpet for him during his visits (Manuel 615). Nonetheless, during his bad moments, the same people shouted that Jesus should be crucified, thus clearly showing an aspect of discrimination to the son of God.

Conclusion

Discriminating denotes a high level of unequal treatment, harassment, or victimization, which may hurt the affected parties. Based on the critical analysis of the stories provided, it came out clearly that discrimination is quite a prevalent phenomenon that may be based on gender reassignment, sexual orientation, age, disability, marriage, and race, or even religion (Pat 68). In this instance, analysis is made on the nature of events in the specific stories that show some level of discrimination.

In my perspective, based on the critical analysis done, I feel that the stories provided are excellent. In an expansion of such attitude, I think that the stories are useful because they brought out meticulously the issues and circumstances which surround various kind of discriminations. As a reader, I feel this is imperative as it would help in tackling multiple situations appropriately to reduce the level of discrimination that may be observed. For instance, in the first story, it highlights that no discrimination should be shown based on gender, and both the male and the female should work hand in hand to help each other. Other vital lessons are drawn across all the stories.
