David Crockett was born in eastern Tennessee on August 17, 1786. Crockett's father taught him to shoot a rifle when he was just 8 years old. Crockett received no significant academic education. On August 14, 1806, he married Mary (Polly) Finley, they had three children and moved to Franklin County, Tennessee.
In 1813, after the War of 1812 broke out, Crockett joined the Tennessee militia as a scout and fought against the Creek Indians in Alabama. After being discharged in 1815, he returned home.
In 1817, he became public commissioner of Lawrence County. Crockett became a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives from 1821 to 1823. Later, he ran for Congress and won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. During his political career, Crockett developed a reputation as a frontiersman.
After Crockett lost the 1835 congressional election and decided to join the fight in the Texas Revolution. On March 6, 1836, he was killed at the Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.
Davy Crockett’s death burnished his reputation as a hero and cemented his legendary status. In 1954, Walt Disney produced a television series based on Crockett’s life.
