Discussion of The Question: Should Humanities Be Taught in The Universities

Is Humanities should be taught in the universities or not?

 Humanities are academic disciplines that study aspects of human society and culture. The world is so diverse. Every day, you meet people from different walks of life. You meet people from different parts of the world and these people may not speak the same language as you, or may not think the same way as you do. Humanities teaches us that we are indeed in the way we dress, speak, and write, but it also teaches us that we share the same home. Moreover, we must learn how to coexist despite differences. For me Humanities should be taught in universities because you can learn academic disciplines that seek to understand and interpret the human experience from individual persons. It also teaches us to deal critically and logically with subjective, complex, imperfect information. Critics says the humanities have no purpose, lacking cultural or economic relevance and not immediately employable but for me without Humanities democracy will not flourish. Studying humanities will help us to interpret things better and much more clearly. For example, when you look at a painting, you might just thing that this is just a piece of painting but if you learn humanities, you will be able to appreciate that the piece of painting has hidden meanings on it. Just like what was mentioned earlier, humanities will help us to understand things better, and this includes people. It will help us to interpret both spoken word and written works much better by enhancing our communication skills.

According to Dr. Adam L. Tate (2020), there are five things on why we should study humanities. First, we should study this to practice the analytical thinking skill you need to be a successful student and employee. Second, is to improve our skills at oral and written communication. Third, is to see the interconnectedness of all areas of knowledge. Fourth, to develop a global perspective by studying cultures throughout the world. And last is to deepen your understanding and appreciation of other’s cultures and other’s point of view.

Humanities help us to answer big questions just like what is the value, meaning and purpose on human life? What is justice? What is equality? What is freedom? How do individuals relate to the state and society? And many more. A humanities education can help enhance an individual’s understanding on nearly anything.

Humanities should be taught in universities because humanistic studies enrich the soul and make you a cultured individual. A humanistic education will help us understand, appreciate, and produce art, music, theatre, and literature. Humanities disciplines focus on understanding beauty and the good, and give students the opportunity to practice making good and beautiful things. Humanities foster social justice and equality and they reveal how people have tried to make moral, spiritual and intellectual sense of the world. That’s why Humanities should be taught in Universities.
