The popularity of rugby as a sport has increased tremendously over the years since it became a professional sport in 1995. It is evident that all the amateur and professional athletes will always be at risk of injury. Arguably, the prominence of rugby over the years has increased its competitiveness as a competitive game. More and more people are participating in sports nowadays, and more attention has been paid to rugby more than ever. The biggest question is whether it is safe. Notably, the biggest question is on the impact of the collision on the players. The players must always use extreme force with the aim of acquiring and maintaining the possession of the ball. In such cases, injuries are always frequent, and the probability of getting injured in one or more games is very high. Most of these injuries are caused by contact or collision, especially when there is a tackle or scrum. Traumatic and repetitive brain injuries then become a routine occurrence, and even though injuries are inevitable, rugby should not be banned at all.

Fear of injury is always common whenever individuals are playing rugby, and there is a need for people to be wise and cautious when playing the game. The popularity of the game has become widespread over the years, but it attracts more criticism that other sports that are similarly dangerous. Rugby players are commonly classified as monsters, and some of them are so big because of the nature of the game. As such, the sport has widely been perceived to be dependent on how hard one can tack or how fast they can run. Professional rugby has been seen to be more dangerous, but with professionalism, it becomes easier to ensure that injuries are not intentional (Harbison, 2019). The nature of rugby also makes it exciting to watch, especially for those people who understand its rules. Also, the size and fitness of the rugby players have changed tremendously over the years, and there is no longer the perception that rugby players should have a certain height or weight for them to be selected.

Nowadays, rugby is more about the skill and determinations that each player has. The evolution of the sport has also seen the introduction that is safer when won, and it reduces the risk of injury tremendously. An example of this equipment is the mouth guards that protect the teeth of the players to reduce the impact of clashing. This clashing could lead to concussion, and the mouth guards are pivotal in reducing this danger. Another example is the metallic post pads that are placed around the pads of the players, and it reduces the impact when they collide with other players. More so, there are the scrum caps, although it is not necessary that they are worn. These scrum caps are some of the accessories that are in the game. Scrum caps are a cloth helmet that only covers the head but does not protect the face. The cap has small pockets that have a soft material or foam, and it stops the game from being dangerous. As such, all these accessories contribute towards ensuring the game is safer.

However, there are many reasons why the game is considered dangerous, and it is the reason why some quarters are calling for the game to be banned. People’s lives are exposed whenever the players are playing because it requires physiques. Even though there are several accessories that can be used to reduce the dangers of the game, they have some reverse effects. It calls for a need to ensure that the safety of the players is not taken for granted because the reverse effects could lead to several injuries. Rugby is a sport that has a high-impact, especially because of the collisions therein, and players must exert extreme pressure for them to win possession. Injuries are therefore frequent because of the contact and collision, and it could lead to concussions. It then leads to traumatic and repetitive brain injuries, and it could also cause some mild cognitive impairments in the rugby players. These problems are also associated with depression, poor verbal fluency, and memory losses. More so, repeated concussions could lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is a progressive degenerative disease in the brain that could cause repetitive brain trauma.

Conclusively, the apparent circumstances are not enough reason to claim that rugby should be banned. Even though there is a need to protect the players from the dangers therein, the game is not as dangerous as it was several years ago. There is an emergence of several accessories and other equipment that can be used to ensure that the game is safer. The current structure of rugby is different from the other sports, but it is not as dangerous as most people presume. People must understand that rugby is more of a contact sport, and the risk of injury, just like in any other sport, is inevitable. However, there is a need to come up with good rules that will make the game safer.
