In this era of globalization, the development of information technology has given a lot of effects to people in the world, especially for young children. The use of smartphones is popular among nowadays generation especially students. Because of mobile phones, students never have to look for a pay phone or wonder about the location of a friend. Smartphones are also widely used as a source of knowledge as well as entertainment. However, there are three excessive use of smartphones can bring bad effects to students in terms of their academic performance, health and psychology.
Firstly, spending too much time on social media through smartphones like facebook, twitters and instagram will have a negative impact on the students’ academic performance as it can make students lose their interest in studies as well as focus in class and fail to complete their homework. For example, students would rather texting a friend rather than listening to a lecture or completing a class assignment. Too much time playing games and watching videos through smartphones will make students be uninterested to read books or to do revision and most likely to fail in their exams. Not to forget, addiction to smartphones will make the students forget things easily as their memory will be reduced They will also become poor thinker if they depend too much on search engine through smartphone. Due to all these, they will have poor exam results which can later ruin their future.
Next, the cell phone habit can also affect the students’ health. One of the negative effects is near-sightedness. The condition is caused by spending too much time at the screen of the smartphone at a short distance. Another eye problem may arise if they strain their eyes to focus on small screen and reading small font letters. Not only that, students might also suffer from hearing problem. They often use headphones to listen to music and other sounds from their phones. It is much worse if they put loud volumes. This loud sound from the earphone will damage the ear resulting in total hearing loss.
Finally, addiction to smartphones can bring psychological effect to students. Students might experience symptoms like insomnia and depression if they spend more than seven hours a day using smartphones One common result of frequent smartphone use is the low quality of sleep as it can disrupt one’s sleep cycle. Most students use smartphones until late at night replying texts, making calls for hours, playing games or watching you tube. A poor night’s sleep will make them be lazy to get up in the morning and always feel tired and lethargic when going to school. They are also likely to fall asleep in the classroom and therefore, missing the topics taught by their teachers. Students who are addicted to this technology are also prone to stress and depression. A study has shown that teenagers who are glued to their smartphones are significantly less happy as they spend less time socializing with their friends or siblings. The pressure faced by the student can cause anger and depression at any time and may cause them to end up with committing suicide.
In conclusion, students need to reduce the use of smartphones for their own good. The school should take action on students who play phones in the classroom, such as giving them punishment or seizing the phone. Additionally, parents should also give full attention to their children who often play phones. They should encourage them to use smartphones for beneficial purposes, for example education. If students are not addicted to using smartphones, they will be able to achieve success in their future undertakings.
