We can understand that addiction is a condition in which a person engages in use of a substance or in a behaviour for which the rewarding effects provide a compelling incentive to repeatedly pursue the behaviour despite detrimental consequences. Addiction may involve the use of substances such as alcohol, inhalants, cocaine, nicotine, mobile and other, or behaviours such as gambling; there is scientific evidence that the addictive substances and behaviours share a key neurobiological feature-they intensely activate brain pathways of reward and reinforcement, many of which involve the neurotransmitter dopamine.

In the age of on demand services, anything and everything, from a movie to a pizza, or a book to a date, just about anything can be obtained instantly. Instant gratification seems to be convenience delivered to the restless young generation. But the basic human trait – self-control is compromised. Studies have shown that delay in gratification leads to a greater enjoyment of the reward. Instant gratification is making us disconnected from society and distracted.

Instant gratification creates unrealistic expectations. People begin to think that the moment you do something, you must get instant results. This necessarily does not happen in the real world. The root cause for this lies in the upbringing of children, when they are given rewards regularly and pampered. This makes them think that instant gratification is the order of the day. Getting a degree or a job is something that needs years. But today’s generation, who are used to instant results, have unrealistic expectations of succeeding in everything that do. When that doesn’t happen, it affects them very negatively. Social media, i. e. : the use of online platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the like can be exploitative in nature. Just as in factories industrialists exploit workers, Patella-Rey in a paper (2012) suggests that social media exploits social media (SM) users. Users of SM knowingly or unknowingly participate in online activities which lead to the big companies making money. Despite the absence of any economic benefits, SM users continue to be passively and voluntarily exploited by marketers.

Most often, people with low self-esteem and poor social relationships are the ones who try to find solace online; thus, they think they should be in constant contact with others. Mobile phone silence can lead to anxiety, irritability, sleep disturbances, shaking, insomnia, and digestive problems.

Since we are now very much engaged with social media, the subconscious mind has created a pattern, which is reflected in our behavior. We may get extremely irritated and annoyed if our smart phone is not with us, or if someone else is looking into our phones. This is what creates a compulsive behavior leading to addiction.

The vast majority of young people have mobile phones. This has become a must-have item in their lives, with traditional socialization spaces displaced by virtual ones. They use their mobile phones for many hours a day, to the detriment of their psychological and social functioning, showing greater vulnerability to abusive or excessive use, and more likely to become problematic or addicted users. This paper aims to study the impact of mobile phone abuse in a sample of college students, assessing the social, personal, and communicational realms. There have been studies previously done in Iran, Saudi Arabia and France in a similar fashion, where mobile addiction has shown to have direct impact of the mental health of the individual.
