Expulsion of The Acadians

Tension and mistrust arising from the war between New France and 13 English colonies led to the expulsion of the Acadians. The British thought the Acadians were a threat to appropriation of the land. The Expulsion (1755–1764) occurred during the French and Indian War (the North American theatre of the Seven Years' War) and was part of the British military campaign against New France. Of some 3,100 Acadians deported after the fall of Louisbourg in 1758, an estimated 1,649 died by drowning or disease, a fatality rate of 53 per cent. Between 1755 and 1763, approximately 10,000 Acadians were deported.

The Acadians (French: Acadians) are the descendants of the French settlers, and sometimes the Indigenous peoples, of parts of A The Acadians continued to live in Acadie until 1755 when they were deported and scattered throughout the British colonies along the Atlantic seaboard, which corresponds to today's Eastern United States. By 1720, a few Acadian families had moved to Isle Saint-Jean which was still under French relocation (French: Acadie) in the northeastern region of North America comprising what is now the Canadian Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, Gaspé, in British policy was to assimilate Acadians with the local populations where they resettled. Acadians speak a dialect of French called Acadian French. Many of those in the Moncton area speak Chiac and English.

The Tricolour represents the Motherland of the Acadians. The yellow star, the Stella Maris, is the symbol of Mary, Acadian national symbol and patron of the mariners. It is set on the blue stripe, because blue is the colour of Mary. The yellow colour of the star represents the Papacy. The Acadian Day of Remembrance pays homage to the more than 3,000 Acadians who were deported from Îsle Saint-Jean (Prince Edward Island) in 1758. Known as The Great Upheaval among Acadians, the 1758 deportation of Acadians from Prince Edward Island resulted in the deaths of more than half of those deported.
