Throughout the years, there have been many interpretations of supernatural healings offered by theologians, physicians, and psychologists. Some people assume that faith has always been a part of healing, which has led to varying meanings of supernatural healing in modern society. In response, researchers have attempted to explore this phenomenon further. However, their research has often been inconclusive, as the results tend to fluctuate. Throughout the centuries, debates have persisted on this topic. Religious individuals are generally more inclined to believe in supernatural healing, yet controversy remains, as some religious adherents oppose the idea of testing the power of God (Wilkins, n.d.). Conversely, those who lean towards science or logical explanations are often skeptical, as faith lacks a logical foundation. Conducting research in this area is challenging due to ethical considerations and other issues. In undertaking such research, it is crucial to consider cultural sensitivity. Despite numerous arguments, people continue to choose to believe in supernatural healing. The research we are conducting today aims to understand our society's social perspective on supernatural healings. Notably, a significant majority of Indonesians—99.45%—believe in supernatural healing, often associating these healings with God and His miracles.

Faith as a Part of Healing

There are many testimonies supporting the belief in supernatural healing:

  1. Dr. Candy Gunther Brown reportedly experienced healing from knee laryngitis (Brown, 2020).
  2. Michael Poole was healed from multiple sclerosis (Poole, 2018).
  3. Dr. Bill Lees recovered from a brain tumor, which was considered a miracle of healing (Lees, 2019).
  4. Sharyn Mackay was healed from kidney cancer after entering a church (Mackay, 2021).
  5. Jean-Pierre Bely, who was paralyzed after visiting Lourdes, regained the ability to walk (Bely, 2017).
  6. Andrew Wilson witnessed his friend, a chef, regain the use of their wrist after two weeks of prayer (Wilson, 2022).
  7. Professors J.P. Moreland and Klaus Issler reported that six people in their church were healed from cancer. Additionally, a person who had experienced total blindness instantly regained complete eyesight, and a young deaf boy miraculously received full hearing after someone laid hands on him and prayed (Moreland & Issler, 2021).

These examples illustrate the profound impact that faith and belief in supernatural healing can have on individuals. They also highlight the ongoing tension between faith-based interpretations and scientific skepticism. The debate over the legitimacy of supernatural healing continues to evoke strong opinions on both sides, emphasizing the need for ongoing dialogue and research in this fascinating area of human experience.
