The weird depicted three very strange, yet distinctive archetypal characters, striking viewers with their personality almost immediately. The Good, a stereotypical strait-laced provider of justice, conveyed a stoic clam without saying a word and lets his gun do the talking. Lacking the flamboyance of his opposite number, the Bad, did not take that title lightly as he literally does many horrible things. In one scene, the Bad proved his flamboyance where he threw a dagger across the room, impaling a huge centipede. He then shot the dagger, driving the blade in deeper. His exuberance and confidence in taking down his victims attracted my attention as it was somewhat something that is unique, drawing him apart from the other two characters.
Throughout the film, Bad was portrayed as a person who is full of vengeance, taking a perverse joy in torturing his victims. The Weird played a strange bandit with dual pistols and an utterly hilarious demeanour. Apropos to his name, the Weird was the only mutable character who had little interest in proving his honour to the other gunslingers and only wanted the treasure as he believed that only with the treasure will he be able to buy a new kind of life, one less haunted by death. All three seemed to have incredible exaggerated skills which would make them invincible if they were to join forces, however, they were only focused on chasing the treasure and each other. As the film progressed, each of the characters turns into something more interesting that they were at first glance, and the final " reveal", so to speak, do a lot to give the story tension on a level beyond treasure and money. One sentence that the Good said in the film that intrigued me was "every Korean has a sad story". Though we never got to know a lot of background of the characters, the director took this advantage of this self-pity attitude. With such an attitude, the director showed that the self-reliant, individualistic attitude that does come from Western, especially American, ideals is actually harmful to society in the big picture, something that is very relatable in today's world.
