There is this universal pressure that as soon as we reach a certain threshold in our early 20’s, we should have our life together, full-time jobs, house, marriage and stability, among others. What are you studying? What is next for you? Do you know where you want to work? I have heard these questions more times that I would like to and they have increased my concern about being too late in figuring my life out. But the thing is, many of us do not have any clue about what we are doing for the future.
I have spent my whole life worrying about the ‘big next step of my life.’ First was when I was graduating high school. Honestly, I didn’t know what I wanted to choose as a career until late September of my senior year. But I learned that is okay; every single person has its own path, pace and methods. People need to stop putting pressure on teenagers and young adults. It is okay to not know what you want, or where do you see yourself in 5 years. This stage of life is for discovering, experiencing and learning everything life has to offer. We cannot expect figuring everything out in one sleep. Try different jobs, make mistakes, take risks, but do it for you and not for someone else.
There is no formula for the perfect life, and if it exists, it would not be the same for everyone. Each individual should decide how they are going to live their life; at the end of the day, they are the ones living it, not their parents or friends. It saddens me to know that so many people allow the opinions of others to hold them back in their careers, or worse, push them to make decisions that have terrible long term consequences. Be honest with yourself and those who surround you. Do not take a job because people expect you to or because it pays well and would look good in your CV, choose because it is what you really want and enjoy.
Social media is one of the reasons why young adults feel pressure about their future. Many times, we see someone on Instagram posting about how good their job is, how well they are doing in college or how great are all the projects they have been working on, but the reality could be other. Do not trust everything you see online, we only see the surface level into everyone’s daily lives. Everyone has a battle you do not know about, struggles and insecurities. We can be different in so many ways, but having flaws is what makes us humans and equals.
In conclusion, you are the only person who can shape and change your own future. You cannot compare life experiences because everyone goes through different things in different stages of life. No one teaches you how to be an adult and you will learn through trial and error. Stay true to yourself, to your passions, and believe in the process. It is okay to not know what the future holds. The exciting thing about life is that it can be unknown and unpredictable; you can have planned all your life and it would surprise you when you least expected.
