Gun is not The Answer: The Importance of Gun Control

Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to explore the many crucial reasons why gun control is necessary and why guns should not be the solution. While I understand that this is a highly sensitive subject and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, it is vital that we educate ourselves while keeping an open mind. By doing so, we can undoubtedly create a safer environment and a more peaceful world for ourselves and our children.

Gun is Not the Answer: The Importance of Gun Control

Up until this point, very few prominent Americans have attempted to use school shootings as an argument for gun control. One reason is the ongoing presidential race, where leading Democratic candidates are aware that endorsing gun control might cost them votes (Smith, 2020). There are approximately 300 million guns in the United States, with about 60 million of these being handguns, which significantly increases the mortality rate in this country. We don't have drive-by poisonings or drive-by knifings, but drive-by shootings are a grim reality. Easy access to firearms makes violent confrontations more common in drug deals, gang disputes, and street fights (Johnson, 2021).

Background Checks and Accessibility

Federally required background checks are a standard protocol for obtaining weapons; numerous states, like Virginia, limit gun purchases to one per month, and minors are not allowed to buy them at all. However, even if there were significantly stricter restrictions, access to firearms would remain relatively easy. This is partly because many guns are stolen or acquired through straw purchases made by a willing accomplice. It is almost impossible to use new background checks or waiting period laws to prevent dangerous individuals from obtaining guns. Those they cannot buy, they will steal (Miller, 2019).

Addressing Underlying Issues

Guns are simply fuel for further violence. People need to look deeper into anger outbursts or threats and recognize and adapt to dangerously unstable personalities. Finding ways to address problems that could later escalate into violence is the best way to solve this issue. Whether it involves admitting to the problem and seeking help from family, friends, or professionals, it is crucial to take proper measures to ensure the community’s safety. Community-based programs and mental health support can play a significant role in addressing these underlying issues (Brown, 2022).

America's Unique Relationship with Guns

To understand this issue, there's something you need to know: America stands alone when it comes to guns. Not only does the US have more guns than any other country in the world, but it also has significantly more gun-related deaths than any other developed nation (Thompson, 2018). If we want to estimate how much the U.S. murder rate would fall if civilians had no guns, we should start by acknowledging that the non-gun homicide rate in this country is three times higher than the non-gun murder rate in England. For historical and social reasons, Americans are a more violent people than the English, even when they cannot use a gun. This fact sets a baseline below which the murder rate will not be reduced, regardless of whether, by some constitutional or political miracle, we become gun-free.

The Impact of Gun Control

The research is evidently clear that if there were a ban on gun control, many lives would be saved. Although it cannot completely eliminate all the violence that exists, it can definitely have a significant impact by greatly minimizing violence. So, you're probably asking yourself if this is the answer, why haven't more aggressive gun laws been passed? During debates about gun control, you'll often hear Democrats complain that 90% of Americans support universal background checks. Yet, you'll see most Republican lawmakers vote against expanded gun control measures. Lastly, you'll see few Republican officials punished for voting against universal background checks (Garcia, 2023).

The Political Divide

Donald Trump had voters in households with guns in every state except Vermont. He lost voters in households without guns in every state except West Virginia. Even if some Republicans were tempted to support stricter gun control, these numbers suggest that they might be compelled to vote against it since gun rights advocates are more likely to make their voices heard. Support for gun control measures sometimes rises after mass shootings. After the Columbine shooting and the shooting at Sandy Hook, Americans were more likely to support gun control than in the periods surrounding them. This is partly due to the fact that the media covered these shootings to a much greater extent than other recent shootings (Lee, 2022).

Conclusion

This concludes my paper on pro-gun control and my points of view on this matter. It has definitely become a trending topic. For now, the 2nd Amendment remains strong, protecting every American’s right to keep and bear arms. People often argue the need for safety in self-defense and the need to be armed. Some may even bring their religious beliefs into play as to why they are against or for gun control laws. Everyone should be respectful of one’s beliefs.
