Internationally known as Haiyan, it has been called the most powerful and destructive storm to make landfall in noted antiquity not only in the Philippines, but in the world. The said typhoon was named by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) as Super Typhoon Yolanda that hit the country in the 8th of November 2013. Prior to its enter in the Philippine area of responsibility, Haiyan was categorized by the Hawaiian-based U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) as “super typhoon” due to having maximum sustained winds that is over 215 kph. The PAGASA does not have a super typhoon classification so it is indeed the strongest typhoon ever struck Philippines. The worst hit provinces were Leyte and Eastern Samar, with a combined population of 2.3 million, winds of 270 kph up to 312 kph, and a storm surge as high as 7 meters or 21 feet.
We only thought the typhoon Yolanda will come in and out of country for a few days and everything will be back to normal but then we under estimated it and never thought that it will leave Philippines with mass devastation killing thousands of people. We did think that government agencies were prepared for the coming of this super typhoon however, it was not enough. Many were blaming the government as the usual way of thinking of Filipinos but in this case no one is to blame but also people who did not want to evacuate when they were told to evacuate. The super typhoon Yolanda leaving the Philippines with a death toll of 6,201 people, over 28,626 injured and more than 1,785 still missing.
It is so heart breaking seeing flashes of news that shows the agony of every pained Filipino, who are victims of the super typhoon Yolanda. It stole thousands of lives and left havoc to almost all Filipinos. Above all, it left its footprints in every Filipino’s heart. A pail of tears, depth sorrow and unmeasurable misery, to name a few.
Stories are still left untold deep within this tragedy. A single glimpse in every victim’s eyes brings heartfelt loss and showcase their grief. A call for us to help. They’re calling for us to give them aid. It is a blessing that other countries address our needs for relief and aid; organizations also in the Philippines go hand in hand to give aid to the victims. Sadly, there is a slow relief given for them. But I still believe that this is not the time to blame someone for this slow action. What we need right now is to continue supporting the victims. We are what they need.
Numerous lives were stolen. Children were orphaned. Homes and livings were destructed. More individuals are noted as missing. Corpses were dispersed everywhere. These are just few of the marks that prevails after the desolation.
Yolanda just took a day, but causes much pain to those survivors and victims, as well. Prayers. The most influential weapon we can offer.
It may be one of the most tragic event of the Philippines, but Filipino spirit continues to reign. There is a rainbow always after the rain.
