Introduction

In today's society, vaping has become a prevalent trend among young individuals. According to a study conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, over 37% of 12th graders reported vaping in 2018 (Shmerling, 2019). These statistics are concerning, considering the limited knowledge we have regarding the potential risks associated with vaping. Despite the common belief that electronic cigarettes are a safer alternative to traditional smoking, recent research suggests otherwise. In this paper, I aim to shed light on the drawbacks of vaping.

Harmful Effects of Vaping

Over the past few years, vaping has gained popularity among teenagers and young adults as a supposed healthier option to smoking cigarettes. While some individuals believe that electronic cigarettes aid in smoking cessation and are less harmful, this narrative is not entirely accurate. It is essential to delve into the disadvantages of vaping.

The Risk of Lung Diseases

Although conclusive evidence linking vaping to severe illnesses is lacking, several studies support the notion that electronic cigarettes can have adverse effects on the lungs. A recent investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that approximately 200 e-cigarette users across 22 states developed severe lung diseases (Shmerling, 2019). Researchers speculate that smoking, whether it triggers an allergic reaction, immune response, or chemical irritation, is the primary culprit. The development of such diseases is not necessarily attributed to specific e-cigarette flavors or brands, as all products contain toxic components, with some flavors posing a greater health risk.

The Risk of Other Diseases

In addition to lung diseases, vaping can contribute to the onset of various serious illnesses. Nicotine-containing electronic cigarettes have the potential to affect brain development, especially in teenagers (Shmerling, 2019). This poses a significant danger to adolescents whose brains are still maturing. Furthermore, research indicates that vaping increases the risk of cancer (Shmerling, 2019). Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of vaping, as it can jeopardize fetal health.

Toxic Ingredients

The composition of vape juices, whether containing nicotine or not, remains a toxic fluid. Many vape juices contain harmful chemicals such as diacetyl, which, when inhaled, can lead to respiratory ailments. Some studies suggest that vape juice ingredients can adversely impact blood cells and organs. While the Food and Drug Administration regulates vape liquid ingredients, potentially hazardous chemicals can still be present. Excessive chemical dosages can also result in health complications.

Getting Addicted

While some individuals view electronic cigarettes as a useful tool for smoking cessation, this holds true only if individuals opt for nicotine-free vape juices and discontinue traditional smoking. Conversely, non-smokers who vape may develop an addiction. Teenagers and young adults who vape are more likely to transition to traditional cigarettes (Shmerling, 2019). Additionally, many smokers use both electronic and traditional cigarettes simultaneously, amplifying health risks and reducing the likelihood of quitting smoking.

Technical Problems and Influence on the People Around

Inadequate battery construction in electronic cigarette devices can lead to explosions or fires, posing risks to users and bystanders. Passive inhalation of toxic chemicals, known as "passive smoking," occurs when individuals breathe near a vaping individual. This passive exposure is as harmful as active smoking, particularly impacting teenagers and young adults.

Unknown Effects

Given that vaping is a relatively recent phenomenon compared to traditional smoking, comprehensive research on its short- and long-term effects is lacking. Vaping's health implications remain ambiguous, with studies suggesting varying degrees of harm. Despite the uncertainty surrounding electronic cigarettes, many individuals continue to vape, akin to engaging in potentially hazardous activities with unknown consequences.

Conclusion

In conclusion, vaping is a novel form of smoking with limited scientific understanding. While some believe that electronic cigarettes offer a viable smoking cessation method, it is evident that vaping poses health risks for young individuals. It is prudent to refrain from all forms of smoking, including vaping, given its established harmful effects.
