Heidi by Johanna Spyri: Chapter 9 Summary

Ms. Rottenmeier is persuaded by Aunt Dete to take Heidi to the city, to keep company to a girl named Clara. Clara is attracted by Heidi's cheerfulness brought about by Heidi's lack of experience with their lifestyle and becomes good friends.

However, Ms. Rottenmeier, views these and the unfolding disruptions as uncivilized and bad behaviour, and places Heidi under more and more restrictions. She found learning to read to be difficult and seeing this opportunity Ms. Rottenmeier, wanted to coerce their tutor into believing Heidi was a lost cause, however the teacher was patient and was willing to teach beginner level students such as Heidi. For her love of the countryside she wanted to look out the window of her bedroom, however she couldn’t reach it, and even with the Butlers help, the view of the windows is that of the city. However, with further inquiry from their butler Sebastian Heidi learnt of a higher vantage point on the Church’s Bell tower, on her way to the tower, she met a boy, whom she asked about the bell tower, they boy persuaded for a monetary incentive to which Heidi agreed, and both went to the bell tower, upon ringing the bell, an old man answered furious that Heidi rung the bell. Heidi asked the old man, to see from above the tower, the old man at first refused, but obliged, Heidi looked from above, but still was disappointed to see that the view was that of the city.

Back down, Heidi saw a grey cat with its litter, and much to Heidi’s surprise, the old man offered to give the litter to Heidi given that she can them a good home, Heidi obliged. Soon later, Clara’s Grandmother came to visit Claire and Heidi, one day Clara’s grandmother seeing Heidi in distraught after seeing a picture that reminded her of the happy life in the countryside, taught her to pray and ask for god’s help in times of hardship. Heidi continues being homesick, and with her attempts to reminiscent the countryside is overcome by the vastness of the city, combined with Ms. Rottenmeier’s, harshness She loses her appetite and becomes pale. After months pass, the Home becomes the target for a string of paranormal sightings of an apparition. However, Sesemann and his friend the Dr. Candidate investigated and found out that it was only Heidi, who was sleepwalking due to stress. The doctor notifies to Mr. Sesemann that Heidi must be sent to her countryside home as soon as possible. Ms. Rottenheimer was joyous of this decision to the point be lively on the early morning hours, where the Butler Sebastian was to accompany her to her hometown, The noise awoke Clara and was eavesdropping, Her father had informed Clara about Heidi’s condition and was to be sent off in a carriage to the town Soon, Heidi reaches the town, where by retracing the pathway to her home, she reunites happily after being separated for such a long time.

Finally she made her way into the cottage’s attic take a view of the meadows and the mountain that she always adored.
