The two people debating on the fifth Democratic presidential debate from Durham New Hampshire at 9pm on February 4, 2016 were Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. During this debate, Clinton accused Sanders of running a smear campaign to question her progressive credentials. Sanders has been accusing Clinton of not being progressive on issues that matter to voters. Some issues include healthcare reform and Wall Street regulation. Clinton counters him by saying that she is a progressive who gets things done without having lofty policy dreams. However, getting things done without having dreams would probably not result in a progressive society; after all, it takes dreams to improve and progress a society.
Clinton is seen trying to draw a difference between herself and Sanders during this debate. She attacks Sanders on his policy proposals that she sees as impractical. For example, she attacks him on his idea of health care; she said that he wanted to remove the health care law and start over again. However, this was not true; Sanders counters this argument by saying that he wants to “rally the American people” to achieve health care for everyone, much like some European countries.
Sanders and Clinton also debated on what it was to be a part of the establishment. Clinton listed all her supporters to show how she had a large amount of support from the people. However, by listing all her supporters, this showed that Clinton was part of the establishment, and Sanders represented ordinary Americans. Clinton’s actions were not very good, because she tries to show how she’s different and superior. This shouldn’t have been the main part of a presidential debate; a presidential debate should show what potential people have to create new policies.
