Making more money by giving away free stuff isn’t a new concept to know. If you live in the U.S.A, you must have heard or visited Costco. The second largest retailer in the world having 750 stores in 10 countries and an annual turnover of $126 billion in 2017, it is a force to reckon with. If you visit one of its branches you are sure to find tables at the end of the aisles offering samples of food products. You will see many customers buying the products they sampled when they had no such intention to do when they first entered the store. So why does Costco do so? The simple answer is that it results in sales.

In marketing terms, offering samples is one of the steps in creating a successful sales funnel and when Costco can do it successfully, you as an creative artist in the digital world can definitely do so too. Sales funnels have come a long way. From being centered only on online businesses they have expanded their reach and now anyone with anything to sell can use it. So if you are wondering that I am a content creator and sales funnels are basically useless for me, think again because they work even if you do not have a product to sell. Bloggers, video producers, photographers, basically anyone who is creating content online, Rejoice! Because sales funnel are an excellent way to sell your digital products by increasing the average order value of each customer.

The end point of any business, whether online or not is to sell their expertise and earn profits. There are two ways to do so. One is to channel all your energy and resources into acquiring new clients and the other is to focus on your existing client base and make sure they become your valuable long term customers. Sales funnels are an excellent way of doing the latter. Let’s state a simple example for you to understand sales funnel even better. As a content creator, you might not be selling a tangible product but there is always some goal you are willing to achieve. Maybe you want people to buy your e-book or you want more traffic on your site so that you get more sponsors, it’s highly unlikely that every person who visits your site will ultimately buy your product.

This is why you have to design your strategies in such a way that your visitors move from the first step of visiting to the last step of buying. In between you may end as many levels as you want like asking them to sign up for a mailing list or offering a free sample, there are many ways to move them down to the last level: obtaining profits. First and foremost when creating sales funnel always ask yourself. Is my offer really wanted? If it is not offering anything new or beneficial to the potential customers then why would they buy it? One great idea is therefore to do a live launch to get the maximum attention. For example a live webinar is a good idea to sell you digital products like online courses, lightroom preset, lettering grid, audio products or latest softwares. Even if the sales are inconsistent at the beginning, your visitors will be ready to move down the sales funnel to become long term buyers.

There are hosts of other benefits too for using a sales funnel for your digital product. First, it will help you build the trust factor with new people. When you offer some free content, more people will take interest and will become prospective customers. Secondly, if you are an expert in your field you deserve to have more subscribers and sales funnel will help in just that: giving your content a purpose and you a solid revenue. Also, a sales funnel will help you give your customers a solution in a very short time. People who are genuinely interested in your service will not have to search for the solution; rather your sales funnel will lead them right to it. Lastly, you do not have to worry about getting additional customers. You know that with a sales funnel in place, more people will buy when then need it allowing you to be as stress- free as possible. You can use sales funnels for specific time duration or for an offer available all year round. For example as a YouTuber you might use a nurture funnel to gather new subscribers, an affiliate funnel to sell a JV offer or as a photographer, you might want people to hire you therefore a simple sales funnel will be your need of the hour. For sales funnel selling digital products or services there are six main steps

  1. Offer a valuable, small piece of free content that piques their interest.
  2. Invite readers to share their e-mail address with you by offering another valuable piece of free content.
  3. Provide a low priced introductory product so that they are eager to buy more from you.
  4. Demonstrate the effectiveness of your business by sending more valuable free content.
  5. Identify a core problem your customers might be facing and present a solution (your product or service).
  6. Adding more customers results in scaling of business and eventually greater revenues.
