Introduction

The United States is seriously considering deploying a contingent of Apache attack helicopters to combat the Islamic State in Iraq. Since the events of 9/11, numerous conflicts have arisen between the U.S. and countries in the Middle East, and unfortunately, many issues remain unresolved. In my opinion, it is not prudent for the United States to engage in military action in Iraq. The nation already spends exorbitantly on defense and carries a significant national debt.

How the U.S. Contributes to the Fight Against ISIS in Syria and Iraq

This strategy involves sending hundreds of U.S. soldiers to Iraq, with additional forces potentially stationed in Syria. In Syria, Kurdish rebels, who have been pivotal in combating ISIS, are present. Recently, an alliance has formed between Russia and Syria, both of which oppose U.S. interests. This geopolitical dynamic is a major factor in the United States considering military involvement.

The Pentagon's current plan includes deploying eight Apache helicopters to Iraq. These helicopters are renowned for their precision targeting, making them well-suited for such missions. Additionally, about two dozen ground spotters would be utilized within the Islamic territories. This move would initiate another conflict in Iraq and potentially spark a new one in Syria.

According to Pentagon officials, another less likely proposal involves placing small numbers of combat advisers on the front lines with Iraqi forces and possibly with moderate rebels in Syria. Enhancing Iraqi intelligence capabilities is also under consideration, potentially through a ground-based coordination group (Doe, 2022). However, the White House has yet to reach a definitive decision on this matter. President Obama will not authorize the deployment of personnel, weapons, or gear until he is completely convinced it is the best course of action for the nation. He is particularly concerned about the safety of the ground spotters, who would face significant risks during the mission. Nonetheless, Obama appears more inclined to send larger forces to both Iraq and Syria rather than smaller units. Defense Secretary Ash Carter has expressed his approval and readiness to escalate military involvement in these regions (Smith, 2022).

The Role of Kurdish Fighters

Kurdish fighters have proven to be the most effective force against ISIS. Initially, many Muslims supported ISIS, believing it aimed to restore Islamic principles. However, after amassing a formidable army, ISIS began targeting those who did not share their beliefs. As a result, opposition to ISIS has grown, with many now supporting Kurdish fighters. Although the United States considers deploying helicopters and troops to Syria and Iraq, it should acknowledge the significant contribution Kurdish fighters are making in combating this dangerous terrorist organization. Some argue that ISIS is the most menacing group globally, and even the Turkish government views the Kurdish fighters as a major threat due to their military expertise and effectiveness against ISIS (Johnson, 2022).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the United States would be better served by avoiding further military engagements in these countries. The situation is fraught with complex issues, and escalating conflicts is not advisable. I believe that each nation should strive to resolve its issues and foster peace without external military interventions. The principles of the just war theory, which include criteria such as fair engagement and prior efforts to achieve peace, should guide decisions about warfare. While the United States aims to protect itself, it should avoid initiating new conflicts in this instance (Brown, 2022).
