It is a well-known fact that the sun is harmful to the skin. In fact, most of us have suffered from sunburn. However, the negative effects of the sun on the skin include a lot more than sunburn. The UV rays are able to penetrate the upper layers of the skin and damage skin cells in the inner layers of the skin. This causes the skin to lose elasticity and age prematurely. Skin cancer is the most devastating effect of the sun on the skin.

However, it is not all doom and gloom, below are 5 ways to protect your skin from the sun.

  1. Use Sunscreen
  2. Sunscreen is one of the best ways to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays. It is advised that you use sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days. The sunscreen should have an SPF greater than 30. The sunscreen should also have zinc oxide for added protection. To get the most out of your sunscreen apply it 20 minutes before you go outside and after every 2 hours. If you are going swimming then make sure you apply waterproof sunscreen.

  3. Wear protective clothing
  4. When going out in the sun you should cover up as much as possible. Clothes help protect you from the harmful UV rays, Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers. Turtlenecks are also very useful since they protect your neck. You should however know that clothes do not offer equal protection. Clothes made from tightly woven fabric provide the best protection.   6. The face is the part of your body that is exposed to the sun at all times. This is because it is not normally covered. For this reason, you should make wearing wide-brimmed hats a habit. They not only protect your face but also your neck and ears. You should also wear wide framed shades with polarized lenses and UV filters. They provide protection to the eyes and the skin around the eyes.

  8. Some medicines increase the sensitivity of your skin to the suns rays. It is therefore important that you consult with your doctor every time he prescribes you medicine. This helps you to protect your skin using other means in case the medicine affects your skins ability to protect itself. During this time it is advisable that you use sunscreen every day. You should also wear protective clothing and avoid sunbathing and tanning beds.

  9. Avoid exposure to sunlight
  10. The best way to protect yourself from the sun is to avoid it, especially between 10 am and 2 pm when the UV rays are most intense. At this time in the day stay indoors or find a shade. An umbrella also is also a good cover if you cannot get indoors.Though the sun is not very friendly to the skin the methods stated above will help protect you. Some of these methods can be used together to provide added protection for the skin. You can couple sunscreen with shades a wide-brimmed hat and protective clothing. These measures can prove to be of utmost help when protecting you from the sun. They help to reduce the risks of conditions such as skin cancer.
