The humanitarian award is an accolade presented to individuals for exceptional writings, work, and international societal achievements. There are specific criteria that need to be fulfilled to receive this award, and there are numerous versions of it. It's not a singular award; examples include the Harvard Humanitarian Award, LCIP, Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, The Global Award, among others.
The official definition of the humanitarian award is, "An award that recognizes the work of persons in communities throughout the United States and internationally who are devoted to the welfare of humanity" (Smith, 2020). Certain criteria must be met to be officially awarded, but the criteria I'll be highlighting are achievements, devotion, selflessness, and character. Numerous individuals have received this award over the years, but the person I'll be focusing on is Leonardo DiCaprio.
Leonardo DiCaprio was born in 1974 in Los Angeles. He has accomplished many things in his life, including but not limited to acting in Hollywood, establishing his own foundation, and supporting numerous charities, organizations, and causes. Leo's character has never been in question. He strives for greatness and remains unwavering in his pursuit of dreams. He is committed to the noble fight for life, a fight not all of us are willing to engage in—the fight against issues society often overlooks. These issues include hunger, poverty, disease, global warming, and animal endangerment.
Beyond establishing his foundation and addressing global issues, he has starred in many films. His most well-known works include What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Titanic, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Revenant, and Django Unchained. His achievements in film are significant, including an Academy Award for his 2015 film The Revenant (Jones, 2016).
His selflessness knows no bounds. Apart from the causes he has championed, the list of charities he supports is extensive: Cinema for Peace, African Wildlife Foundation, Declare Yourself, Film Foundation, Global Cool, Global Green, Green Cross International, Indigenous Environmental Network, International Fund for Animal Welfare, Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation, Natural Resources Defense Council, Onyx and Breezy Foundation, Pediatric Epilepsy Project, Reef Check Foundation, Save the Elephants, SOS Children's Villages, Stop Global Warming, The Gorilla Organization, The Solutions Project, TreePeople, Unite for Japan, WildAid, and WWF (Brown, 2019).
This demonstrates that, as previously mentioned, he has worked both nationally and internationally to make the world a better place by addressing current problems and preventing future ones. He devotes his time and resources to providing entertainment and to preserving life. His efforts in the realm of humanitarian work are as significant as his contributions to the arts.
"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight I want to introduce a very special person. Someone who has made remarkable contributions to both film and global issues. Someone who has been the voice of the voiceless, the help for the helpless, and the hope for the hopeless. You know him well, you love him dearly, please welcome Mr. Leonardo DiCaprio."
