Green Computing reduces energy consumption and regulates carbon dioxide emissions. Future renewable computing proposals should include reliable energy-saving facilities, because in the future, green computing will be performance-based rather than demand-saving. The aim of Green Computing is to enhance computing capacity. Research into efficient and environmentally friendly computing resources, is brought to the attention not only of environmental organizations, but also of other sectors. Modern IT systems depend on a dynamic mix of people, network systems, and hardware; as such, a Green Computing program would tackle all of these areas. Cloud computing leads to efficient use of energy which is beneficial for the green tech innovation trend. Potential research in academia focused on study in the field of Green Computing, as this is a new area and there is much more to do. Energy computing will have big potential implications. Green Computing has implications in every computing field, as the aim is to save the world and eventually life.

Introduction

Green computing, the research of effective and environmentally friendly computing resources, is being brought to the attention not only environmental organizations, but also businesses from other industries. The environment is the first thing that come to your mind when you heard “Green Computing”. But this concept was not affected by the environment, by the money also. In past years, computer industries have acknowledged that green is in their best interests, in terms of public awareness and cost reduction. Green Technology is growing continuously and not just a restricted term for rising energy consumption in information technology. However it is expected that this will be a field with innovations and changes in daily life within and without information technology.

What is Green Computing?

Green computing is an environment science application that offers financially viable methods that preserve the natural environment and its resources. Green computing efficiently designs, manufactures, uses and disposes of computers and their resources, with minimal impact on the environment. Green computer reduced electricity bill and give a full rest to your mind. Now in these days, we use the star management strategies and technologies that reduce energy consumption waste. Green computer is created to perform without a negative environmental impact. Such design includes everything from materials and components to how the computer uses its power supply. Green computing has the same objectives as green chemistry, which increases the product's lifetime and renders the product more energy efficient, makes the recycled product and manufacturing waste easier to decompose and biodegrade with less toxic chemicals.

Key Issues of Green Computing

The most important computing issue is the widespread concern about conservation in computer operation. By having a core argument in temperature, energy, and output, it is necessary to get the maximum benefit by upholding appropriate layout strategies to have a major difference between them. There are still many areas to be tackled and some problems to be met:

  • Control of the cooling equipment and other data center requirements is necessary which primarily improves the power of the IT infrastructure and is a growing obstacle.
  • Heat removal equipment also needs to be regulated, as this is also a significant increase in total energy usage.
  • Proper disposal and finding ways to recycle the electronic items properly. New optimization strategies are required in computing-conscious of performance-energy-temperature.

Key Objectives of Green Computing

Green computing is designed to achieve sustainability and to improve computational resources are used. Green computing activities include implementing ecologically friendly manufacturing methods, designing power-efficient devices and optimizing systems for processing and recycling. Green computing eliminates the use of dangerous materials, optimizes the fuel efficiency throughout the lifespan of the device and facilitates the modifiability or recyclability of obsolete goods and scrap from factories.

Research continues into core areas like the use of computing devices as resources–as productive as efficient and developing computer technology based algorithms and systems for performance. Continued efforts by engineers, manufacturing companies and users are needed to ensure that the aims of green computing are achieved.

Approaches of Green Computing

Modern IT systems depend on a complex mixture of people, network systems and hardware; as such, all these fields should be addressed by a Green Computing initiative. Companies also have significant financial incentives to gain control their energy usage, and most powerful might be easy.

Power Management

The Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) is an open industry standard that allows an operating system to control the power-saving features of its corresponding hardware directly. Many applications allows user to alter the voltages supplied to the CPU manually, thus reducing both amount of heat generated and the amount of electricity consumed.

Telecommuting

Technologies like teleconferencing and telepresence are often used in Green Computing projects. The advantages are many; improved staff productivity, decreased travel-related greenhouse gas emissions and higher profit margins arising from lower overhead costs for office space, electricity, lighting, etc.

Product Longevity

The method of PC production accounts for 70 per cent of the resources used in a PC's life cycle. Product longevity plays vital role in all the stages of the life of a product—right from design to the end-of-life phase. Product longevity helps to ensure the smart use of resources in product and solution manufacturing. E-waste is a rising global issue as millions of machines are disposed of in landfills and many of the raw materials used in their manufacturing, such as arsenic, cadmium, mercury and chromium, become toxic if they leak into soil and groundwater.

Resource Allocation

Resource allocation is used to efficiently divide the available resources. It is part of resource management, the distribution of project management services is the coordination of tasks and the resources required by those operations, thus taking into account both the resource accessibility and the duration of the project. There are two parts of resource allocation: Strategic planning and Resource levelling.

Virtualizing

Computer virtualization refers to the abstract of computer resources, such as running two or more physical hardware and logical computer systems on a single package. Through virtualization, an administrator may merge multiple physical systems on a single, powerful system into virtual machines, thus unplugging the original system and reducing power consumption and cooling. Virtualization can help distribute research so that computers are either occupied or in a state of low power sleep.

Materials Recycling

Recycling computing equipment can keep out harmful products such as lead, mercury, and chromium, and can also replace equipment that would otherwise need to be produced, saving additional energy and emissions.

Recent Implementation of Green Computing

Using Energy Star Labelled product

ENERGY STAR products are better than regular products and use less energy. ENERGY STAR products must follow the stringent energy efficiency criteria set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the U.S. Energy Department. These goods save money of electricity bill because they use less energy and help protect the environment by generating less harmful emissions from power plants.

E-Waste Recycling

Electronics waste, commonly known as e-scrap or e-waste, is the recycling of used electronic items. Electronics contains various poisonous and dangerous chemicals and materials which are released into the atmosphere if we do not properly dispose of them. Instead of throwing E – waste, it could be given to non-profits charities or private recycling body.

Remote working

Remote working is an arrangement where people can work from home using the Internet, telephone and email. People have the freedom to plan their days so that they can enjoy their professional and personal life to its fullest potential and coexist in harmony. There has been a cultural shift in what society considers to be a suitable work-space-and virtual work has capitalized on that emerging liberty.

Cloud Computing

Cloud computing involves storing and accessing data and programs over the internet, rather than the hard drive of your computer. The cloud is merely an Internet metaphor. Whether done in private or a public cloud configuration, cloud technology addresses two critical elements of green computing i.e. energy efficiency and resource efficiency through “virtualization”.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Green Computing

Advantages of Green Computing

The advantages of Green Computing are as follows:

  • Green Computing reduces use of energy which controls emission of carbon dioxide.
  • It reduces energy consumption for electronic products during their production and recycling.
  • Green Computing also contains environmental policies that enable individuals and businesses to recycle and reduce their energy consumption.
  • Green Computing is a powerful approach to utilize energy resources and office space in an eco-friendly way.

Disadvantages of Green Computing

Green Technology is good for environment and nature but it has also some disadvantages are as follows:

  • The major disadvantage of Green Computing technology could be expensive because it needs latest technology to deal with disposal process.
  • Some computers considerably not strong enough.
  • Rapid Technology change.

Future of Green Computing

The future plans towards green computing should include efficient services to get energy saving because in future, green computing will be based on performance, rather than demand reduction. Green Computing's primary focus is on the self-interest of the enterprise in reducing energy prices, at data centers, resulting in the associated reduction in carbon production. Recently, cloud computing has received considerable recognition as an innovative solution to providing global communications technology services by maximizing the use of data center resources. Cloud Computing results in better resource utilization, which is good for the sustainability movement for green computing.

In enterprise, huge amount of data that is stored duplicated information. Intelligent compression techniques can be used to compress the data and eliminate duplicates help in cutting the data storage requirements. Green Computing has applications in every sector of computing as the goal is to save the environment and ultimately the life. Equipment design and recycling, virtualization, paper free environment and power management are current main applications of Green Computing.
