There are many components that are involved in an internal combustion engine. The piston, crankshaft and connecting rod are three very important components. Together these three form the crank mechanism within the engine. The pistons function involves converting the pressure that is generated by the burning air fuel mixture into mechanical energy, which is then used as force. The piston also controls the amount of heat that is released during combustion and it helps to guide the motion of the connecting rod. Out of all of the components that are involved in an internal combustion engine, the piston is the most likely to fail, due to the amount of mechanical stress, thermal stress and mass that it undergoes. Piston rings are used to help seal the area between the piston and the cylinder wall, ensuring that gases do not escape into the crankcase. The connecting rod is a shaft that connects the crankshaft to the piston.

The main function of the connecting rod is to provide a constant smooth movement between the crankshaft and piston. The connecting rods are generally made of nickel and chrome, but sometimes are made of aluminum if the engine is small. The function of the crankshaft involves taking the linear motion, that is provided from the piston, and converting it into a rotational motion. The shape and size of the crankshaft allows it to rotate freely within the cylinder. The cylinder, also known as the engine cylinder block, is where the combustion of fuel takes place and the power is produced. The main function of the cylinder is to help assist the piston. There are two sides of the cylinder, the upper side and the bottom. The upper side contains a combustion chamber, which is where the fuel burns. The bottom of the cylinder contains the crank case, where the crankshaft is bolted to.

There is one end of the cylinder that is closed, usually the top, known as the cylinder head. The cylinder head contains two holes, one for the intake of fuel and the other for exhaust. The main function of the cylinder head is to secure the cylinder block and make sure that no gases escape or enter. Finally, the turbocharger is used to harness energy from exhaust gasses and use it to compress clean air from the atmosphere. This compressed air and more fuel is then fed back into the combustion chamber. Introducing air that is compressed to more than atmospheric pressure allows engines to produce more power without increasing the displacement of the combustion.
