The International Federation of Journalists is the world's largest organisation of journalists. First established as the Fédération Internationale des Journalistes (FIJ) in 1926 in Paris, it was re-launched as the International Organization of Journalists (IOJ) in 1946, but lost its Western members to the Cold War and re-emerged in its present form in 1952 in Brussels. Today the Federation represents around 600,000 members in 140 countries.
The organization aims to protect and strengthen the rights and freedom of journalists across the globe. It is also dedicated to working for solidarity, social justice, labor rights, globalization, democracy, human rights, and fighting poverty and corruption. The IFJ is a founding member of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange, a global network of non-governmental organizations that monitors press freedom and free expression violations worldwide, and defends journalists, writers, Internet users, and others who are persecuted for exercising their right to freedom of expression. The IFJ was also a founder in 2003, of the media safety coalition- the International News Safety Institute. Since 1990, the IFJ has distributed a yearly report which records instances of journalists and media staff murdered over the span of every year. It utilizes the data to fight for more noteworthy security for journalists, especially neighborhood and independent columnists and care staff who do not have the assets to ensure themselves in conflict zones. The yearly reports are chronicled on the IFJ website.
The IFJ Safety Fund was established in January 1992 and has become internationally recognized as an important and crucial source of support for journalists under threat. It is the only international assistance fund for journalists established by journalists. The Safety Fund is an integral part of the IFJ Safety Programme which includes casework, protests, campaigns, provision of information and production of various publications. As the Safety Fund provides immediate financial relief to a particular journalist, the Safety Programme strives all year round to highlight and improve the plight of all journalists.
