A coffee maker is a small appliance used to brew coffee. The most common one used in most households involves putting coffee grounds in a paper or metal funnel which is then set over a coffee pot. Water is then poured in the chamber and then heated to boiling and your fresh coffee pours out into a pot below. In the following research project, I will discuss the history of the coffeemaker and how it has improved over the years. Over 125 years ago the first drip brewing coffee using a coffee filter was invented. Also during that time, a French inventor developed the “pumping percolator” in which boiling water in a bottom cavity forces itself up a tube and then slowly pours through the ground coffee back into the bottom chamber.

One innovative device that radically changed the world of coffee making was the invention of the coffee maker. A device with a very old history, today it is part of almost every household worldwide. The coffee maker has gone through several stages with the passing of time. The drip-brew, the two-level pot, and the percolators are just a few of the milestones the coffee maker has gone through. Nowadays, the best coffee maker has the possibility to offer coffee in a very short period of time and it is made from extremely resistant materials, such as aluminum and copper. In the past, the best coffee maker used to be made from nickel-plated copper. This was thought to be resistant. The materials used today are light and durable and the models are still based on the vacuum principle.

A farmer from the Midwest, named Hanson Goodrich, patented the modern percolator. Goodrich's patent was granted on August 16, 1889, and his patent description has little differences from the stovetop percolators sold today. With the design of the percolator, water is heated in a boiling pot with a removable lid, then the heated water is forced through a metal tube into a brew basket containing coffee. The substance that flows freely comes out and drains from the brew basket, where it dribbles back into the pot. This process is continually repeated during the brewing cycle until the liquid passing repeatedly through the grounds is steeped to perfection. Domestic electrification simplified the operation of percolators by providing for a self-contained, electrically powered heating element that removed the need to use a stovetop burner. A major element in the success of the electric coffee maker was the creation of safe and secure fuses and heating elements.

While early percolators had used all-glass components most percolators made from the 1930s were constructed of metal, especially aluminum and nickel-plated copper. The coffee maker was invented so everybody was able to have his or her morning joe in an easy and fast way. You could make a whole pot of coffee or just a cup of coffee and able to regulate how strong or weak you want it. The coffee maker can also be used to extract hot water so that you can have a cup of tea or hot chocolate, not just coffee. The cost of using a coffee maker is roughly $18 a year in the United States. Which is right between a 40-inch tv which is $8 and a refrigerator that is $37. Also, far cheaper than buying a cup of coffee every day before work! Also, the ease of buying a coffee maker at almost any retail store and the price range of $10 for your average every household coffee maker to the extravagant coffee maker at $1,000,000. The Java Pot espresso maker does the full process every time you order a cup. It roasts, grinds and brews each individual cup of coffee. The invention of the coffee maker has made households around the world much happier being able to have coffee in a much faster and easier way. You can even set it the night before so that you have the wonderful aroma to wake you up in the morning.
