A lot of literature has been written on the theme of partition but Khushwant Singh mainly focuses on the consequences of partition. Khushwant Singh was a well known Indian columnist, creator and legal advisor. A lot of literature has been written on the theme of partition but Khushwant Singh mainly focuses on the consequences of partition. Khushwant Singh’s father was one of most famous manufacturers of his Time.

Khushwant Singh got his education at Modern School in New Delhi. He received his higher education from government college in Lahore and eventually studied at St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi and King’s College in London. Khushwant Singh has also written much political and social commentary for publications, including The Illustrated Weekly of India, The National Herald and the Hindustan Times. Singh was also known for his writing and Indian literature like “Train to Pakistan’(1956) “Delhi: A Novel’(1990) “The Company of Women” (1999), “Truth, Love and a Little Malice” (2002), “The Good, the Bad and the Ridiculous” (2013).

For his extremely good service to the Indian society and culture, he was awarded with a Padma Bhushan, but due to his deep contempt for Operation Blue Star, he returned it back to the government. Khushwant Singh became popular with the publication of Train to Pakistan in 1956. This also won the “Grove Press India Fiction Prize” for Year 1956. Originally it is entitled Mano majra which suggests static, while the present tiltle, Train to Pakistan, implies change. This perhaps prompts V.A. Shahane to comment that “The change o title of the novel from Mano Majra to Train to Pakistan is in with the theme of the novel.” Mano Majra a small village situated near to border in Punjab and known for the railway station otherwise it has no political or military importance.

Its population of Sikhs and Muslims, landlords and farmers, live in easy comradeship. Singh’s characters Hukum Chand, Iqbal and Juggut Singh show threesides of partition, thus providing multiple perspectives. Hukum Chand is a Hindu magistrate and thus provides a hindu perspective of the event of partition. He is a government official so his valuea and actions depict human welfare rther than the bias he has against Muslims. Juggut, on the other hand is a sikh rogue who sacrifices his life in an attempt to save the lives of migrating muslims.another important character of novel is Iqbal who stands for all identities. His religious identity remains ambiguous and a point of contention till the end of the novel. He stands for all religious identities.

Khushwant Singh has divided the novel into four parts and it is the fourth part named karma. In this section the story reaches its dramatic end with juggut singh sacrificing his life to save the lives of his girlfriend nooran and other Muslims. jugga does not hesitate evan for a moment while sacrificing his life for nooran and other Muslims. He never like Iqbal, indulges in the dilemma of morality or fruitfulness of his actions, and leaves it to Guru (God) to discriminate between the riegh and the wrong and reward them accordingly, juggut understands the philiosophy of Granth Sahib in real sense, which says For God is true and dispenseth truth.

There the eleet his court adorn, And God Himself their actions honors.(Train to Pakistan 183) The aim of the research is to explore the feelings of love and compassion that we find on pages of the train to Pakistan by Khuswant Singh by focusing on the character jugut Singh.
