Gangnam style, Monster, Fake Love, one might be wondering what type of music do they fall into? Is it electronic music with the fast breathtaking tempo and beats? Or is it R&B with the cool wording that one can easily sing along to? Or can it be hip-hop with all the rap and snare? The answer simply is not one of the genres but with a careful blend of all this genres we get a genre that is catching the world by storm. Korean pop or Kpop as normally known is this type of genre which is gaining popularity worldwide. Gangnam style for example busted into the scene and created headlines by having 100 million views and everyone wanted a piece of the song to star in commercials, movies etc.
A genre little known back in 1993 has developed and matured into a force to reckon with over the last 20 years and cannot go without a say that it covers a niche which some songs leave a gap. I for one have an interest in as it flows down by the tempo of the song to the rhyming of the words the songs are there to entertain and not to fill a quota of an album. The video on the other hand is a pure master class from the development of the character in the video to the picture quality and mind this that I am not impressed that easily with some mediocre video just by a famous singer; I believe that a singer is a performer and one should please their audience to the a level of certain satisfaction.
K-pop with all the flare still has western influence visible from the tempo of the songs follows a routine from the west. Even in the video the greatest influence comes on the costume wear which tends to follow the routine used by the west.
The revolution of the music has been a turn on by various artists from the likes of star to Seo Taiji and the Boys who brought a certain twist to K-pop with the invention of a culture of having rap in their songs. This was a complete contrast to the star system which haboured a lot from the audience.
Seo Taiji and the Boys first song as a group “Nan Arayo” first time to be performed at a panel they ranked it lowly but on release to the world the reception was off the charts. The response stated that the audience needed a new style of performance that was captivating and entertaining.
BoA is a special gem that has produced a number of hits that have really captured the world attention. The song “we are the future” tends to be a reflection of a bright future that is in store for Kpop. The video quality is a work of art as the picture quality is of high standards. The character development in the video is a step by step evolvement of a character who proofs to be a new look towards music video production.
