Besides, according to McCartney & Parent (2015) ethics is an important not so that we can understand the philosophically but rather so we can improve how we live. Law enforcement is an action of people who enforce laws and punishing people who violate the rules governing the society. It also requires an unwavering adherence to procedures and rules. Besides, it focused on the letter of the law and not the spirit of the law. Law enforcement can be a very effective way of maintaining public order and punishing crime as it seeks for people to comply with the law or face the consequences.
There are many actions and behaviors committed by law enforcement officers who are in charge and off duty that can be considered misconduct. According to Garrett (2015), these acts can be classified as ranging from the minor mistakes in judgment, to the explicit deliberate exploitation of honest law abiding citizens as well as the criminal component. Misconduct and corruption will damage the integrity of the profession no matter who is the victim. Misconduct is defined as the unacceptable or improper behavior or wrongdoing by a professional person. There are some wrongdoings that are often committed by law enforcement such as accepting bribes, accepting gratuities in exchange for special treatment, stealing from both citizens and criminals alike and physical harm inflicted on innocent people. It also betrayal the trust of society that law enforcement officers are supposed to have with each other to ensure their safety.
Law enforcement ethics are a large subject and covers a detailed description as a guideline when a person confronted with a problem for which required his/ her to make a difficult decision. The Law of Enforcement Code of Ethics is very detailed and clearly written for regulation. The Law of Enforcement Code of Ethics stands as a preface to the mission and commitment law enforcement agencies make to the public they serve. All persons who enter the criminal justice fields like police officer must follow the rules in order to ensure the best decisions making. Criminal justice officers have to be able to make a correct call or someone themselves could be killed. Officers are tough to make ethical decisions. Law enforcement officers are expected and required to follow law enforcement ethics. This acts often creates ethical issues or dilemmas for those serving to uphold the law. Professional organizations in the law enforcement community have brought attention to the importance of ethics. Many law enforcement officers believe that rule of ethics strengthens the organization’s mission, the ability to resolve moral dilemmas and adherence to policies and procedures. Based on McCartney & Parent (2015), there are several importance of ethics in law enforcement. Firstly is make a better society. When the acts help make a better society, they will reward with a better own lives and without moral conduct, society would be a miserable place. Secondly, treat everyone equally. Equality is all individuals were treated with the same rights and this is impossible without the majority of people behaving in a morally manner. Lastly is lessened stress. When we make unethical decisions, we tend to feel uncomfortable and concerned about our decision making. Making the right moral decision on an issue, reduces stress.
Based on case study by Garrett (2015), there are three potential misconduct of law enforcement officers. Firstly, a Tennessee patrolman forced a woman to perform oral sex on him. Tennessee patrolman, Willie Marshay Greer (33 years old) stopped a woman driving over the speed limit at 1 am and after checking her name through the database, Greer found she had an open warrant for an arrest. He offered to “strike a deal”. Greer then forced the woman to perform oral sex on him while her hand were handcuffed. Greer has violated the ethics and misconduct of the law of enforcement. Besides that, a Chicago cop sodomized a man they wanted to turn into a drug informant. A Chicago man, Angel Perez (32 year old) is suing the Chicago Police Department after accusing several officers were beating him and sodomizing him with a gun to force him to cooperate as a drug informant in 2012. One of the officers inserted a cold metal object believed to be a servicing officer’s revolver to the plaintiff’s rectum, according to a report in VICE. The complaint continued that the two officer laughed hysterically while inserting the object and Sergeant Cline joked that I almost blew your brains out. The officers that involved in this incident are clear have no integrity or ethics. They are more than likely simply individuals of bad character who receive joy in victimizing someone and have no place in law enforcement.
Next, King City police officers arrested in corruption scandal. For years, the top ranking officers in the King City Police Department targeted the city’s most vulnerable residents essentially stealing their cars for profit, said District Attorney Dean Flippo on Tuesday in February 2014. The former and acting chief of officer police and another four King City police officers were arrested on felony charges on Tuesday. Four of them accused of bribery, embezzlement and conspiracy. The owner of a local tow truck company which is a brother of the acting chief of officer police was arrested in the scheme. He involved impounding the cars of mostly unlicensed drivers and then selling them when the cars’ owners were unable to pay towing and storage fees. The officers that involved in this incident are doing improper behavior as law of enforcement officers. This incident culminated in the arrest of various subjects for offenses that occurred from assault to theft and while the people of the city complained, nothing was done until the behavior went on for approximately three years before the arrests were made.
