Love Vs Hate in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet illustrates love through the characters of Romeo and Juliet. They experience choices in the relationship but because of this they make the wrong choices because they are caught up in the passion of love. The extreme hate is shown through the characters of Tybalt, Lord Capulet, Benvolio and Mercutio because of Romeo and Juliet’s love for one another.

Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet explores extreme passion of hate through the characters of Tybalt, Lord Capulet, Benvolio and Mercutio. Extreme hate can lead to the consequence of those people killing each other. The play warns the audience about the consequences of extreme hate and the madness involved with that. This is shown when Tybalt says that he hates all Montagues and can’t find anything positive about them. This leads to Tybalt killing Mercuito because of his dislike to the Montagues. Through the characters of Mercutio who is a friend of the Montagues and Tybalt who is a capulet, Shakespeare highlights the violent hate that these characters have for one another. The consequences of hate are shown in act one scene one, when Tybalt and Benvolio are out on the streets when Tybalt says this “ What, art thou drawn among these heartless hinds? Turn thee, Benvolio, look upon thy death”. The technique used is a metaphor for the use of heartless hinds.This shows the audience that Tybalt has large hate towards Benvoilo wanting him dead. Benvolio replies “I do but keep peace. Put up thy sword, Or manage it to part these men with me”. The technique used is paradox because it says to do one thing but do another. This highlights that Benvoilo is a nice person and doesn’t like to fight people even if it is his enemy. Benvolio is trying to stop violence between the two families before it gets too serious. Tybalt says “What, drawn and talk peace? I hate the word, As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee, coward”. The technique used is foreshadowing. This is shown in the way that violence is so strong that it brings in characters like Benvoilo even when he is trying his best to bring an end to the fight. This quote shows the audience that Tybalt has no liking towards the Montagues and in fact hates all of them. In act one scene five, Tybalt is outraged that Romeo is at the Capulet's party and Lord Capulet wants Romeo to stay at the party. Tybalt says “Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe: A villain that is hither come in spite, To scorn at our solemnity this night”. The technique used is rhyme with spite and night. This quote shows the viewer that Tybalt has called Romeo their enemy and wants him to leave immediately. Tybalt says “It fits when such a villain is a guest: I’ll not endure him”. The technique used is imagery because the viewer can imagine that happening and can picture it. This quote shows the viewer that Tybalt wants to harm Romeo but Lord Capulet wants Tybalt to keep the peace between Romeo and Tybalt. In act three scene one Tybalt is forcing Romeo to fight him and this ends in some extreme consequences. Tybalt says “ Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries That thou hast done me, therefore turn and draw”. The technique used is character foils because Tybalt’s violent anger serves as a character foil for Benvolio peaceful’s character. The quote shows the audience that Tybalt wants to fight Romeo and this relates back to the extreme hate that they have for each other. After Tybalt tries to get Romeo to fight with him this happens “Draw, Benvoilo, beat down their weapons. Gentlemen, for shame forbear this outrage! Tybalt, Mercutio, the prince expressly hath Forbid this bandying in Verona streets. Hold Tybalt! Good Mercutio!” Says Romeo. After Romeo says this Mercutio ends up dying. The technique used is tone because Romeo uses a loud tone when saying that he forbids this fight. This shows the viewer that because of extreme hate between the families it can result in someone getting severely hurt. To communicate the idea that the Capulets and the Montagues have extreme hate towards each other and can’t find any positives about one another.

This shows the viewer that Romeo has made a choice to go to the Capulet's party and also makes a choice to get to know Juliet which is a bad choice because their families are enemies. Romeo tells Juliet “If I profane with my unworthiest hand This holy shrine, the gentle sin in this, My lips two blushing pilgrims, ready stand To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss”. This shows the audience that a metaphor is used to compare Juliet to a holy shrine. Juilet continues this metaphor saying “ saints have hands that pilgrims’ hands do touch, And palm to palm is holy palmers’ kiss”. This shows the viewer that Juliet has continued this metaphor and also a religious reference. She suggests that they shake hands instead of the kiss.This relates because she doesn’t want to kiss him because they know nothing about each other, it is also a good choice that she has made. This scene shows that it is a tale of love between two star cross lovers. The next scene is act two scene two, when Romeo is talking about Juliet and Romeo can see her but Juliet can’t. Romeo takes the chance to see Juliet and hopefully doesn’t see her family. Romeo says “It is the east, and Juliet is the sun”. In this the audience can see that Romeo has used a metaphor which compares Juliet to a sun. Romeo then continues saying “Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon”. The viewer can see that he has used personification saying that the moon is jealous of Juliet’s beauty. Romeo continues to say “Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven, Having some business, do entreat her eyes To twinkle in their spheres till they return”. The technique used is personification comparing Juliet's eyes to the stars. This shows the viewer that Juliet’s eyes are eyes that can be stared at of a long period of time. To communicate the idea that Romeo and Juliet are in love even if their parents that are rivals don’t want them to love each other.

In conclusion, Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy of young star crossed lovers who are caught up in the passion of love. Due to their feuding families, their love is forbidden but they are so consumed by love they pursue their relationship regardless of the feud. Due to the hatred between the two families, the future for them was never going to be a happy ending.
