Mental Illness and Its Treatment Nowadays

In the world today there are over 400 million people affected by some form of mental illness. But in today's world many of these people are able to be treated in some form due to the gained knowledge about the illnesses compared even to fifty years ago. Today there are many studies out there about the proper way to treat these illnesses and what may cause them.

In order to understand the way illnesses are treated one must know what a mental illness is. According to psychiatric.org a mental illnesses are “health conditions involving changes in emotion, thinking or behavior.” Mental illness can affect anyone because a person's environment may trigger symptoms of it. It is also very common because nearly 19% of US adults have or have experienced some form of mental illness. But even though it is so common that many people want to hide their illness rather than try to seek help. A person's mental health is the, “effective functioning in daily activities.” That is why it is so important to look at loved ones mental health to see if they may need help.The way you can treat mental illnesses varies dramatically depending on what a person may have, but in many cases a person will probably have to do a mixture of treatments for the best results.

One of the most well known form of treatments is medication. A patent could be medicated for a very wide variety of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolarism, ect. These are not merical drugs by any means because, “psychiatric medications don't cure mental illness, they can often significantly improve symptoms.” Using these medications along with other treatments such as therapy can make the treatments work better. Some examples of medications are antidepressants, anti-anxiety, mood-stabilizing, and anti-psychotic medications.

Another form of treatment that is out there is Psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is, “talking about your condition and related issues.”(Mental Illness) During these sessions you will be speaking to a therapist to help learn about the patents moods, feelings, thoughts ,and behaviors. Through learning these things the patent may learn coping or stress management techniques. There are also many types of psychotherapy each used for specific types of illnesses or to learn different things about a patent.

Sometimes when someone's condition is so server they may have to seek help in hospital or residential programs. These programs are generally sought out because a patent may not be able to care for themselves or are at risk of hurting themselves or someone around them. There are many options available for this such as partial days days or more. These many be a good option because they, “offer a temporary supportive place to live.”

To conclude, because of all of the treatments that have been developed over the years, mental Illnesses today are easier than ever to treat. Today many people are functioning members of society even though they may be or have struggled with an illness.
