The machine shop contains a lot of machinery, and it is crucial that all hazards are not overlooked. I will be using a range of different, yet similar methods to identify the hazards within the machine shop, and I will be explaining how each of these methods helps to mitigate and possibly even prevent potential hazards.
The first and most important step I will take is conducting regular hazard assessment surveys, also known as risk assessments. A risk assessment is a systematic process carried out to identify potential safety hazards and ensure that each is properly understood. According to Smith (2021), risk assessments are essential for maintaining workplace safety. Furthermore, they check whether current precautions and emergency plans are adequate to reduce risks to a tolerable level, or whether more action is needed. They also serve to highlight intolerable risks to determine steps to overcome or eliminate them. I will take risk assessments of all equipment to ensure they are in good condition and safe to use. Additionally, I will assess all operations to ensure that certain machinery and equipment are used in the right way, with the correct safety protective clothing worn. A task analysis of all tasks will also be conducted to ensure they are carried out correctly and safely. This method primarily involves observation; however, it forms the foundation for all safety measures.
The next method involves examining accident data records, which is a system for recording injuries, near misses, and identified hazards. This will allow me to verify whether the hazards that caused past incidents have been addressed and to identify possible trends. By investigating all reported workplace accidents and incidents, as noted by Johnson (2020), we can find ways to tackle the causes of health and safety incidents, thereby reducing the accident rate. I will also ensure that all procedures carried out in the workshop are safe. This includes checking if safety training and correct supervision are implemented for new fitters and whether safety training and practice are provided for each new piece of equipment. Moreover, I will verify if personal protective equipment is worn during certain operations and tasks. Material safety data sheets will also be reviewed to identify the potential harm from hazardous substances and the necessary precautions.
Another method will be conducting group discussions involving everyone working in the workshop. We will talk about safety in the workshop, which will be useful for identifying hazards and recommending solutions. Group discussions are very beneficial because a worker might have noticed a potential hazard that no one else had observed. As Thompson (2019) emphasizes, collective insights can significantly enhance hazard detection and solution formulation.
The next step involves conducting a safety audit. A safety audit is the collection of independent information on the efficiency, effectiveness, and reliability of the total health and safety management system, and creating plans for corrective action. The primary purpose of a safety audit is to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the regulations made under this Act. A safety audit ensures that the systems put in place are working efficiently and are fit for purpose. I will also carry out inspections on all safety procedures. For example, are there suitable fire exits? Are they unobstructed? Do they open? Ensuring these factors are met is critical for maintaining a safe working environment.
In conclusion, the methods I will adopt to identify hazards include risk assessments of all equipment, operations, and tasks, visual inspection of operations and equipment, checking accident data of past incidents or near misses, safety audits, group discussions, inspections, and checking the regulations to ensure they are all being followed. Each of these methods plays a vital role in creating a safer machine shop environment, as they collectively help in identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential hazards.
