There are leaders who have changed and shaped this world. One among them in Abraham Lincoln, with the leadership skills he made America great again. He has not only achieved success in changing the USA for the better but also changed the thinking of every citizen by his own style in conveying messages to the people. Lincoln was a determined leader who communicated with his colleagues and people affectionately with great emotional intelligence. As a leader, it is an important responsibility of implementing strategic changes in the team. Leaders must be ready to take change decisions when needed and need to motivate his team toward the change. By deliberately working on three areas, any leaders become great and grow themselves, and lift the organization.

  1. Wisely managing the present.
  2. Selectively forget the past, which no longer adds good value in the organization.
  3. Creating the future by adopting new techniques beliefs and behavior which enables a step-change in leadership.

Lincoln was seen as one of the most celebrated leaders of US history. He bounded and protected his people by his vision which united war-torn countries. With his determination and lot many sacrifice and decisive action, he has eliminated and cut out what was no longer working. In his presidency, Lincoln faced a dry situation. Civil war divided the country in two half North and South and the union army had just lost the last two battles. People from his own part were united and raised their voices and attacked Lincoln for his compromising and indecisive attitude. Organizational change can be transformational or incremental, and sometimes an incremental change can amplify into a much larger and more radical change than was first anticipated by Robert N Lussier.

To win the civil war Lincoln has taken a massive decision in which within three months public opinion on Lincoln has been shoed from negative to positive. “The New York Times” has mentioned in one of the articles that, the nation was been led by a ruler who peculiarly adapted to the need of the times. By this, his fortune also shifted on the battlefield. By his changes, his army celebrated new victories in Vicksburg and Gettysburg, which had made the crucial turning point of the war. Successful implementation of strategic change can re-energize a business, whereas failure can lead to loss of confidence among employees. Robert N Lussier. In the early summer of 1863, Lincoln has two big challenges in front of him. Reestablishing control over the army and recapturing public opinion. To overcome the obstacles Lincoln has made some bold decisions. He disposed of some of the old beliefs which never worked in the past and implemented new changes to lead his team in a different manner.

The first set of beliefs Lincoln disposed of was how he related to his generals. Instead of giving the firm decision to their Generals, he use to give timid decisions as Lincoln believed that as civil leaders Generals had to take responsibility of the army. After many exchanges of decisions with ineffective generals, Lincoln gave up his style. Later on Lincoln addressed his generals by giving them direct instructions rather than pushing them. He wrote to General Joseph who had repeatedly defined his suggestions. One of the most important aspects of leading change is using emotional intelligence in leadership to build strong coalitions and produce transformational change. To eliminate all the miss understanding, “I place you to in the relation to General Halleck commander of one of the army, to the general in chief of all the armies. I will be giving direct orders to him and you to obey them”. Soon after the change in leadership, the army book a series of victories in the war and never waited for the perfect time. Under the leadership of Lincoln army is moving proactively toward victory. President Lincoln had very little time to have direct contact with the public. In the year 1863 Lincoln had broken the tradition and stepped out of the social prison of the White House. From the success of the letter-writing campaign held to get the support of the British public for the union, Lincoln has implemented a public writing campaign in his own country. Ten million copies of his messages were released and more than one billion people read the content which he would like to spread. Lincoln's public outreach helped him to gain continuous public support during the rest of his presidency. Ultimately, change is about changes in human behavior. It is about people doing things differently Robert N Lussier.

When it comes to effective decision-making, successful leaders much take into account each changing landscape and need to handle the consequences of each decision. For any leader, his decision will be fallen into, leader-centered decision making and team-centered decision making.

During the civil war, Lincoln was running over slavery and rights. Lincoln as a supreme commander waited for the correct time to make the war end. His decision-making policies made him a great person and unforgettable leader in the history of the USA. In the presidential role, Lincoln need to take decisions based upon the higher good intent. By his decisions making strategies people around him think that Lincoln used his own opinions to make policies and hold the responsibility to others. But his decision would best be described as coming from high moral grounds.

The team-centered decision-making model works best when team members have different skill sets and points of view and when participation is essential to frame decisions and gather short-term and long-term commitment. The civil war decision he has made resulted in successful leadership in the civil war in which he saved the nation and abolished slavery. During the initial stages of the civil war, Lincoln thought that the war for restoring the union, not for slavery. As per his personal belief where he thought that slavery was offensive and pushing of abolitionists republicans, Lincoln decided to move carefully until he gets the support for his people.

Lincoln informed to his cabinet that he would be issuing a liberation declaration that will absolve the supposed firing states. Cabinet people have convinced him not to make the declaration until after a Union triumph. He waited for the correct opportunity, after winning the battle of Antietam in 1862 Lincoln announced that within a hundred days the rebellion slaves would be free in his area. In the final proclamation which states that all the persons held as slaves in the rebel areas are set to free. Within the thirteen amendments in 1865. Slavery was eliminated throughout America. After seeing this anti-slavery nations like Great Britain and France who had been friendly to the alliance had needed to get involved on behalf of the south. By the amendment strengthened Lincoln's party and helped them to be in power for the next two decades. In analyzing Lincoln's decision-making strategies it appears that he was surrounded by a good team who has no fear I putting down the opinions and views in front of the leader. Although team-centered decision-making can take longer to implement decisions since it involves coming together of different ideas, the quality of decision-making is much higher than any other model if groupthink is avoided.

After becoming 16 presidents of the United States of America. Lincoln appointed his opponents as his cabinet members which was the greatest decision which he made ever. After realizing that his opposition was better-qualified members to serve as president. In the next movement, he reached to them and requested to be a member in his cabinet. Three of the leaders accepted his invitation and his cabinet was strong enough to handle any situation. With the help of these four members and other two members from the Republican Party have joined among his cabinet members. In order to make the best decision, Lincoln has realized that he needs to have a balanced opinion from his advisor. In order to do so he has gone to Douglas and requested him to be his cabinet advisor. In the initial stage, he has refused to be a part of the cabinet. At that point, Lincoln mentioned that Douglas assist him with discovering 6 individuals from the Democratic Party to fill in as bureau individuals.
